Hands On Beekeeping Workshop Newcastle - 3 Hours.

What we’ll do We'll be going into a hands on beekeeping fun and educational experience. After an introduction and safety lesson you will be taught how to be a bee keeper including topics such as tools and equipment, bee life cycles and roles, multiplying bees and swarms, pests and diseases, Queen rearing. Flow hive invention. Q & A. Following the theory lesson we will get suited up into the protective clothing and head into the yard. We will first light the smokers (to make the bees docile) then I will demonstrate opening up a bee hive for an inspection. Then it is over to you, it's your turn to open up a bee hive, pull out the frames one by one and try to find the queen, check she is laying eggs properly, check there are no pests or parasites attacking the hive on the inside and check the bees are building the comb straight. Tastings of various honeys to follow.  PROTECTIVE SUITS PROVIDED. Please wear white socks. No children under 15 unless you bring your own child size bee suit. What else you should know I'd be very surprised if someone got stung by a bee but there is a slight chance. For that reason I would not suggest this for those with a bee allergy. I would suggest having lunch before arriving. What I’ll provide PROTECTIVE BEE SUITS  Tea, Coffee and Biscuits  What to bring Fully enclosed shoes Normal length white socks. NOT ANKLE SOCKS. A baseball cap/hat (helps keep the veil from touching your face) Pen and paper if you wish to take notes Light coloured clothing is also preferable
