Whistler and Nature

This exhibition reveals new research into the influence of industry, the military and historical revivalism on one of the greatest artists of the nineteenth century, through his depictions of natural and industrial landscapes. James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) was an American artist who lived most of his life in the UK. He was known for his innovative artistic style and bold personality, with a reputation for verbal and legal retaliations against art critics, dealers, and artists who insulted his work / those with whom he had quarrelled (like his famous 1878 libel case against the critic, John Ruskin). Through this intriguing collection of paintings, sketches and prints, we will examine how his family involvement in early 19th century industry, and pursuit of a career in the US military, shaped his knowledge of observational drawing and influenced his artistic style. It also looks afresh at his work in the context of attitudes to landscape in British art and design, shaped not only by classical revivalism but by a desire for landscape improvement and productivity. Whistler’s smoky images of warehouses, harbours and industrial scenes were designed to showcase a new kind of productive, wealth-generating landscape for the modern Victorian age; a view of nature constrained by man-made structures and urban life.

BNI Central - Referral Networking Group

BNI Central is a professional networking group for ambitious individuals and companies who want to build worthwhile and profitable relationships in the North Coventry/South Birmingham area. The Central Group meet every Tuesday at 08:30am at The Greswolde Arms Hotel. Central's success has been built on welcoming visitors who get the opportunity to meet many individual local businesses and share their own business’s benefits and goals with the group. Visitors can attend twice in 6 months before deciding if they'd like to apply to join the group. Every member and visitor if they wish, will have the opportunity during the meeting to speak for 60 secs about: WHO they are, WHAT they do, HOW they add value to their clients and WHO they would like to be referred to. Please bring plenty of business cards to hand around to our members and other visitors in the room. BNI is not just the most successful networking organisation in Birmingham and Coventry – it’s the most successful organisation of its kind in the world! Our BNI groups meet every week, so we’re confident we have at least one major new business referral waiting for you right now. So what are you waiting for? Registration for the event is free however there is a charge of £15 payable on the day to cover the cost of breakfast and venue hire.     FAQs How can I contact the organiser with any questions? Please email Penny Higgs on [email protected] or phone me on 07540899907 with any queries. What do I need to know before attending a BNI Meeting? I will email you before the event with all of the information you need regarding times of arrival, what to expect from the meeting and also anything that you need to bring with you or prepare beforehand. Is there a meeting fee payable on the day? Yes, all of our chapters charge a small fee which varies depending on the venue. This fee is between £10 and £20 and covers venue hire and breakfast/lunch depending on the time of the meeting. How do I apply to join BNI? We recommend that you visit a couple of different chapters to find one that you feel is the "best fit" for you. You will be asked after a couple of visits whether you wish to apply to join but there is no hard sell. I don't want to join but can I still come along to visit and network? Yes, we welcome visitors as long as there is no cross over in trade/profession with an existing member. There is no hard sell to join, we love having new people in the room! However you will only be able to visit a couple of times as we are a membership organisation.
