Chamber Behind the Scenes - Darlington Hippodrome

Join us for an exclusive look behind the theatrical scenes of Darlington Hippodrome. The Darlington Hippodrome re-opened at the end of 2017 after £13.7 million restoration.  This ambitious regeneration project not only reinstated much of the Edwardian splendour, but also totally reimagined the space for a new generation of theatre goers.  Accessibility has been greatly improved and the new footprint enables us to deliver a much expanded programme of education and community outreach activity. The Hippodrome plays a key role in the cultural life of the town and the region as a whole. It has been a source of entertainment since Edwardian times, enjoying a very loyal following and hosting performances by great names and of enormous variety. The building itself is Grade II listed, an iconic landmark and the source of immense civic pride. Its importance extends to the part it can play in the renaissance of what is one of the UK’s most important industrial and economic heartlands – Teesside and the Tees Valley. At the gateway to the Tees Valley, Darlington has ambitious plans for growth in jobs and business and for enhancing its reputation as the place to live, learn, work and play. After tremendous efforts to get this magnificent building up and running, we are now entering an exciting new phase focussing on engaging with the local business community and residents.  Our aspiration is to create an inviting cultural and social hub for the people of Darlington and the wider Tees Valley, and a place where young people can be inspired, develop their skills and work towards employment in the creative industries.  Join us for a tour of this magnificent building, including behind the scenes access to the stage, led by the Theatre Director Lynda Winstanley, after which there will be an opportunity to network and sample the new menu in Hippo Lounge.
