Pen to Print: The Inheritance of Colonialism Workshops

Join Preetha in this series of workshops on ‘The Inheritance of Colonialism’, examine stories, voices, memories and images that reveal our personal stories in relation to colonialism. The creative writing exercises will also look at gently releasing some of the ‘pent up’ anger against an unfair system which was once an accepted way of living. Workshop leader and co-ordinator, Preetha Leela Chockalingam, whose book ‘The Catamaran Oracle’ is set in 1920’s India, will work on the redraft of her novel between workshops and occasionally read relevant segments out to participants for feedback. Set in a biscuit factory in 1920’s rural Kerala, India,‘The Catamaran Oracle’ deals with themes of Indian independence, colonialism, worker’s rights, women’s education, empancipation and matrilineal systems.

Community Energy and Neighbourhood Planning

Are you thinking about setting up a community energy project in your local area? Community energy projects present an opportunity for people to work together in their local area to minimise their energy costs and reduce their impacts on the environment. Knowing where to start and how to engage your community can however be a daunting first step which prevents projects from getting off the ground and being included and taken seriously in neighbourhood plans. In this free workshop, you can find out more about what community energy projects might be suitable for your locale, how to effectively engage others in your community with ideas and build them into neighbourhood plans.                 The workshop will be delivered by the Centre for Sustainable Energy and be based around the PlanLoCaL scale model, a fictitious but typical British urban to rural landscape which will enable you to consider how different renewable energy types fit within a landscape, and what combination of energy sources may be suitable for your area. There will also be a presentation on the neighbourhood planning process and how community led energy projects can be developed in conjunction with neighbourhood plans. You will also hear an update from Community Energy England , the national voice of the sector and from the Greater South East Energy Hub on available support and funding which could take your community energy project from a plan to reality. Note: If you attended the community energy workshop in July 2018, this workshop is designed to build on the themes introduced with interactive activities to develop ideas and move projects forward. Spaces are limited so please register to confirm your attendance.
