YES BALL GAMES Hacking Barking and Dagenham’s open space for social sport and play

Theme: YES BALL GAMES! Hacking Barking and Dagenham’s open space for social sport and play. Get on the grass and take back the streets. How can we do that?, how can we encourage the community to come together, turn up and play? How can we encourage communities to self organise and turn their surroundings into a physical yes ball games space? Who is behind this event: This is a social impact hack event in partnership with Digilab, Barking and Dagenham Council, London Sport and Sport Tech Hub. The challenge: Can technology play a role in getting children and isolated demographics more active in Barking and Dagenham’s open spaces for social sport and play? Barking and Dagenham has the highest level of childhood obesity in London and the second highest in the country. A child is more likely to be obese here than in Richmond. Physical inactivity is responsible for one in six deaths (equal to smoking) and is estimated to cost the UK £7.4 billion annually. Unfortunately our population is around 20% less active than in the 1960s. If current trends continue, it will be 35% less active by 2030. Most people don’t realise that physical activity has significant benefits for health, both physical and mental, and can help to manage over 20 chronic conditions and diseases, including some cancers, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and depression.
