Sunderland Digital - Managing Depression as a Creative


Sunderland Digital aims to bring together and enrich our burgeoning digital and creative community through a series of informal monthly meetups and talks. Managing Depression as a Creative Vic Bell, Brand Design at Nooklyn, will be joining us to share her story about living as a creative with depression, how that can feel and how to manage it.Vic will explore issues she’s dealt with, coping mechanisms and provide tips on how you can help people in our industry if you don’t directly deal with mental illness. Vic will also touch on imposter syndrome and how that can manifest alongside mental illness. North East Community-led Housing Conference


Community-led housing is a growing force in the North East. The government's Community Housing Fund and other resources are now available to help increase the number of affordable homes developed by communities themselves. We want to make sure we take advantage of the opportunities available. This FREE conference will launch consultation into a new Strategy for Community-led Housing Development across the North East and will provide the opportunity for planners, architects, housing officers, land agents, local authority councillors, parish & town councillors, community organisations and staff from registered providers to find out more about community-led housing. Presentations and workshops will include details about how to deliver community-led housing (tenures, types of organisations, funding, etc)  and examples of local projects already delivered in Northumberland, Sunderland and Tees Valley. A keynote speech will be delivered by Nancy Doyle-Hall of Virgin Money Foundation together with presentations from the National Community Land Trusts Network and Homes England. This event is open to anyone across the North East and is part of a national series of events funded by the Nationwide Foundation and coordinated by ACRE (Action with Communities in Rural England). Parking for the event is at: Framwellgate School Durham, Newton Drive, Framwellgate Moor, Durham, DH1 5BQ. On arrival you will be directed to the car park on D block and site staff will direct you to the path that leads up to the Sjovoll Centre. Train: The Centre is twenty minutes walk from Durham Train station, with regular buses every ten minutes from the entrance. Bus: There are regular buses every ten minutes into the centre of Durham and to Newcastle

Construction courses with Free CSCS (Darlington) 18th - 29th June 2018


At Wates we are committed to the long-term sustainability of the built environment and to leaving a lasting legacy for the communities in which we work. As part of our award-winning and industry-leading corporate sustainability programme, Reshaping Tomorrow, we provide training and employment opportunities for those furthest from the workplace. Building Futures is a two-week programme for adult (19+) job-seekers. It offers adults the chance to visit active construction sites, trains them in key skills, awards them an industry-recognised skills certificate and opens routes for a potential employment in the construction industry. Established in 2006, Building Futures is managed in partnership with Ixion Holdings, a subsidiary of The Shaw Trust, and supported by Wates Giving. Building Futures seeks to give participants tangible, relevant career training, through a combined approach of qualifications, employability training and through an expert partner network; Qualifications Participants will gain the BTEC Level 1 Certificate in Construction, Asbestos Awareness, Manual Handling and are awarded a free test to secure a five-year Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card. Both of these allow participants to work on construction sites - all funded by Ixion and Wates Group. Employability Training We provide employability training in the form of job interview training, and classroom exercises designed to boost confidence, self-esteem and presentation skills, to help people who have spent time out of work. Participants will also visit local Wates sites to gain a valuable insight into what it is like to work in construction and have a guaranteed interview with Wates and their supply chain.
