Scott King: A New Life in Frigg

Frigg is a fictional new town created by artist and graphic designer Scott King. It is part of Britlin’s, a satirical proposal to redesign Britain as a 1970s holiday camp. A combination of the words ‘Britain’ and ‘Butlin’s’, Britlin’s plays with the power of collective nostalgia to imagine a new society. From a new Chairlift Network connecting Land’s End to John O’Groats, to the creation of self-policing New Towns fuelled by fun; Britlin’s proposes strategies to make “Your Past Our Future”. ‘A New Life in Frigg’ invites applicants to sign up to the Britlin’s vision. Potential residents can use the large site map to imagine their own day-to-day journeys around the town. In Come to Frigg (2018) – a newly commissioned work made by filmmaker Paul Kelly – a Britlin’s representative explains the advantages of relocating to this utopia. A series of questionnaires set up scenarios to test recruits suitability for joining the Britlin’s community, probing underlying concepts of nostalgia. The design of the Frigg site is based on Butlin’s Clacton, a holiday camp located in Clacton-on-Sea in Essex. The camp was one of 10 camps founded by former showman Billy Butlin and opened in June 1938 with the vision of providing British working class families with ‘a weeks holiday for a weeks pay’. Butlin’s Clacton closed in September 1983 as a consequence of changing tastes and the development of package holidays abroad. Image courtesy the artist and Herald St, London

Handel Julius Caesar Arias & Duets, Telemann: Horn Concerto - Maldon Festival

Giulio Cesare in Egitto (Julius Caesar in Egypt) was composed for the Royal Academy of Music in 1724. It was a huge success, being revived by Handel several times during his lifetime, and is now one of the best-known Baroque operas in existence. Loosely following the events of the Roman Civil War of 49-45 BC, the opera charts the development of the love affair between Caesar and Cleopatra; the power struggles between the Queen and her brother Ptolemy; and the fate of Cornelia, the widow of Pompeii- Julius Caesar's rival and main defender of the Republic. Giulio Cesare contains some of Handel's most famous and exquisite music, including the famous hunting aria with horn obligato, Va tacito nascosto.   Our talented young soloists are joined by the Choir of St Mary's in the opening and closing choruses. Jonathan Farey not only plays the obligato horn but also appears as soloist in Telemann's Horn Concerto.  The highly prolific Georg Philipp Telemann composed only this one work for horn among his many concertos for one or more instruments and orchestra.  The dates given for its composition are from the period when he was working either as court composer for Eisenach (beginning around 1708) or as city music director in Frankfurt-am-Main, after 1712. The lack of hard information about its composition means that there also are no clues as to which horn player Telemann had in mind when he wrote the concerto, but it can be inferred from the difficult writing that the performer was an advanced master of the instrument. The writing in the opening movement suggests the instrument's origin as a means of giving signals during the hunt or on the arrival of post-carriages. Although the main theme is full of figurations with that suggestion, it is a fluent and melodic work, well advanced in musical imagination over simple horn calls. The second movement uses the horn in a slow, song-form piece with qualities of vocal music of the time, not excluding decorative touches in the melody. The finale is a minuet in the slowish regal tempo that was still standard for that courtly dance at the time.

Hong Kong Phooey - Cartoon Capers

Race Briefing - 9:15 am  Race Start - 9:30 am Come down to the Essex coast for this themed event, remembering the comedy capers of the No1 Super Guy himself, Hong Kong Phooey! See if you can be quicker than the human eye and compete against the clock at this 6hr timed event on the Brightlingsea coastline.  Brightlingsea is a small historical sailing town with much to offer the day visitor or as a base to explore the surrounding towns and countryside. http://www.brightlingsea-town.co.uk  Today Brightlingsea is a thriving town with many interesting old buildings set amongst a town centre of friendly mainly independent shops. The narrow streets lead down to the Town Hard where you can spend some leisurely time to watch the comings and goings, see families enjoying crabbing from the town jetty or disembarking from the ferry or visiting yachts.  From the Town Hard you can take a leisurely stroll along the promenade lined with colourful beach huts, past the open air swimming pool to Batemans Tower where you will find a café, children’s playground, skateboard park and the start of your next challenge!  The almost completely flat, traffic free, looped trail course, will give you the opportunity to run as many or as few laps as you wish, within the time limit of 6 hours. The loops will be 10.54km/6.55m in distance and so you will need to complete 2 laps for a half marathon, 4 laps to cover full marathon distance, and then if you choose to continue, the clock will be your only limiting factor!  With an aid station at the end of every lap, you will have the ability to fuel yourself without having to carry everything you might need. You may leave a bag with your specific requirements at the aid station, for you to raid as you see fit! Alternatively, there will be flapjacks, fruit and nuts, and also water and squash, should you feel like a change!  An opportunity to run on a fast, lapped course, without the need to carry your usual ‘clobber’ and with a sought after, unique, bespoke medal, this promises to be a fantastic event for runners of all abilities.  UKA Affliated Member & Race Permit issued by TRA and a 100 Club qualifiying event. Run Route & Aid Station The race will start at outside The Batemans Tower Café, Promenade Way, Brightlingsea, Essex. CO7 0HH.  There is ample parking on the roadside along Promenade Way, but also in public car parks located on Promenade Way.  http://www.tendringdc.gov.uk/car-parks/promenade-way-brightlingsea  http://www.tendringdc.gov.uk/car-parks/western-promenade-grass-car-park-brightlingsea Toilets are located near Bateman’s Café on the West Promenade, in the car park at the end of Promenade Way. These will be accessible, before, during, and after the race.  Please view our Terms and Conditions before registering for any event. Please be mindful of other users of the promenade area and park responsibly. There will be no excuse for littering given the ability to dispose of any unwanted rubbish at the end of every lap in the bins provided. We would like to continue to return to this venue regularly and constant littering might make this difficult.
