Yellow Fever in Swansea Docks

Doors open 5pm, talks start at 5.30 Yellow fever is caused by a virus that is passed to humans through the bite of female mosquitoes, mainly of the species Aedes aegypti. This mosquito does not breed north of Bordeaux and any outbreaks of yellow fever in the UK would be produced by mosquitoes imported from elsewhere. Such an outbreak did occur in Swansea in the very hot September of 1865, when the wooden ship Hecla arrived bringing a cargo of copper ore from Cuba. Although 3 of the 14 crew had been buried at sea on the voyage due to yellow fever, no quarantine flag was raised. As the ship’s hold was opened in Swansea, around 60 mosquitoes escaped to cause the outbreak, killing 15 people over 25 days. This lecture will follow the Swansea patients and their symptoms and reflect on current yellow fever outbreaks, including Brazil in 2018. Accessibility The venue is fully wheelchair accessible. There is a hearing loop in the lecture room. We can offer large print copies of presentations if requested at least a week before the event. Assistance dogs are welcome. If you have any other needs, please email us at [email protected] and we will assist you wherever possible. View our Terms & Conditions for events here. Where possible, we film events and put them up online. Check our website for footage of past events. Image: Yellow fever in Buenos Aires (Wellcome Collection)
