Women's Suffrage in Dorset; forgetten stories

Dorset is not a county usually associated with the long campaign for votes for women that culminated in partial enfranchisement in 1918. However, that does not mean that the women (and men) of the county were indifferent to women’s lack of citizenship. This talk explores where women chose to organise, what they did and the effects it had locally. The focus is on the towns across Dorset where suffragism of all sorts was apparent. Why did suffragism blossom in some places and not others; why were there far more suffragists than suffragettes; and how did the experience of this campaigning affect Dorset women once the vote was won? This talk is part of the Wimborne History Festival 2018 Talks & Lectures Programme.

Farrant Singers present Seventh Heaven

Discover "Seventh Heaven" at Milton Abbey Historic Church set in a Beautiful Capability Brown Landscape "Seventh Heaven" comprises Great choral classics from seven centuries and seven countries.  Don't miss this great opportunity to enjoy music from this excellent choir in the wonderful acoustic setting of Milton Abbey Historic Church. The concert will feature music spanning seven centuries from the 15th century right through to the 21st century and from seven countries: Portugal, Germany, Russia, America, France, England and Ireland. Composers whose works are being performed include Byrd, Parry, Rachmaninov and Eric Whitmore.  'The Farrant Singers is the longest-established chamber choir in Salisbury, with close links to the medieval city, the surrounding Wiltshire villages and the Cathedral, where the choir often sings the services in place of the Cathedral Choir.  The group was founded in 1958 by the composer Richard Lloyd, and conductors since then have included Mark Deller, Richard Shephard, David Halls, Colin Howard, and Daniel Cook. The choir celebrated its fiftieth anniversary in 2008 with the commissioning of The FarrantSingers Collection, seven pieces by composers associated with the choir. The choir took part in the world premiere of Bob Chilcott's Salisbury Vespers in 2009, has broadcast live on BBC Radio 4 in 'Sunday Worship', and has worked with the John Armitage Memorial Trust to present new and recent works for choir, brass and organ. It has also toured to France, Germany and Italy, and makes occasional visits to sing services at cathedrals around the UK. This year, 2018, The Farrant Singers will be celebrating their 60th anniversary with a concert in November with some exciting commissions as well as a performance of the Durufle Requiem.’

North Dorset 7s 2018

North Dorset 7s Festival is in its 6th year, and over the past 5 years we have gone from strength to strength. We've hosted over 140 teams, welcomed 10,000 spectators and raised £11,179.87 for Cardiac Risk in the Young - and we don't intend to stop there! This year, we are adding a fresh perspective onto the event, with expanding our off-pitch activities and entertainment. We will be developing a family-friendly Health & Wellbeing area with inflatables, health experts, local producers and companies that can help you and your passion for sport!  Don't worry though, we haven't forgotten about the rugby! We're working closely with North Dorset RFC and other names in the rugby world to bring you another unforgettable year! This year we will be the first games played on the Max Biles ground at North Dorset RFC - which is really special for us as Max is the whole reason we're doing this! Our Men's Social games will be played there, with their own bar and food trucks to create that buzzing atmosphere you're all coming for! So stay tuned for more exciting news regarding what's to come at this year's tournament! We've added a larger range of tickets, plus the ability to donate to CRY straight from your phone through Eventbrite. We want this year's event to be in everyone's calendars, and to be the start to your summer! #stepintosummer
