HowTheLightGetsIn Festival

The world’s largest philosophy and music festival returns to Hay-on-Wye for May 2019. The festival is packed with stimulating debates, covering everything from politics and art to philosophy and science. Previous speakers include Green Party leader Natalie Bennett, political theorist Noam Chomsky, and actors Helen Lederer and Sally Phillips, and former Conservative leader Michael Howard. Meanwhile on the music front they've been joined by headliners like Gilles Peterson, Rae Morris, King Charles and Mercury Prize nominees Ghostpoet, C Duncan and ESKA. Next years line-up to be announced soon. There’ll be more than 200 events that include debates, talks, music, comedy and cabaret performances that will dazzle and amaze until the Midnight Mayhem parties begin. There’ll be plenty of time relax during the day, whether that’s yoga, dining over a Long Table Banquet, or meeting the speakers for a chat over tea and cake – or even an evening wine tasting - at the Open Platform sessions. Before they went electric: Martin Wheatley accompanied by Martin Litton

From the birth of the Banjo to the golden age of the Guitar, in a fascinating cabaret that takes us from Africa to Hawaii, from the Ukulele to the Octophone, the wizard of the strings sings, plays, entertains and demonstrates a dozen fretted instruments. Bach, Chopin, Hot Jazz novelties and even the Dambusters March.  Expect to be amazed!  FAQs Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event? No, all are welcome.  What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event? There is a car park just up the road - the other side of Swan Bank from The Swan hotel (it's called 'No parking on Thursdays'). Or there's an official car park in Oxford Road, HR3 5EQ. Or check out www.justpark.com/uk/parking/hay-on-wye for other options.   What can I bring into the event? A cushion or two... a well-behaved dog... there is a bar at which to buy drinks.   Is the church warm?  Yes, it is centrally heated.  Is the church comfortable? You might want to bring a cushion for the pews if you think you will need one and there are chairs available on request if pews don't suit you.  Will there be a bar?  Yes, and the bar is open from 7:00 pm and during the interval.  Will there be any swearing or disrespectful behaviour in the church?  Definitely not. Anyone behaving badly will be barred. And that's never happened at any Hay Jazz event. Do I need to be religious?  Not at all. The church is a regular music event, beautiful and an acoustic marvel, with a fabulous piano.   Are discounts available?  Yes, on request from Janice Day at [email protected] If you think you can make a good case for a discount, please ask. Group bookings, for instance, might get a discount. Be creative. Unfortunately, senior citizen discounts are not available, as most of us are senior citizens.  How can I contact the organizer with any questions? Ring Janice Day on 07748 652 194 or email [email protected] What's the refund policy? Refunds will be available up to one day before the event.  Will I be able to get in on the door? That's highly likely, yes.  Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event? Yes please, or show it on your phone or tablet.  Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable? Yes.   Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends? Yes.
