Work, Career & Inclusivity: Unconscious Bias - Milton Keynes

In today’s politically correct society most of us make a conscious effort to avoid prejudice in any shape or form. But what about our Unconscious Biases? Unconscious biases affect our decisions, our communications and our behaviours. We all have biases, whether we feel comfortable with that or not, and our biases often shape our view of the world including the staff we manage and the customers we engage with. Our biases are often influenced by our background, cultural environment and personal experiences. It’s a fascinating topic. A brief bio: Helen has an MA in Arabic Studies but has spent her career in HR. She set up her first HR consultancy over 20 years ago. Her current business, Jaluch, supports over 350 businesses with both day to day HR issues as well as providing training services. Operating for over 15 years clients are both in the UK and further afield including the US, France, Germany and Saudi Arabia. Helen was delighted in 2017 to win the Dorset Employer of the Year Award, following on from being a national finalist in the Inspirational Leader of the Year Award in 2016 and receiving an International Women’s Entrepreneurial Award in Istanbul in 2015.   Helen’s personal interests relate to achieving individual and business potential. As well as speaking on topics such as ambition, innovation, motivation and leadership Helen is passionate about volunteering. She currently works each week in a homeless shelter and mostly focusses her energies on supporting people who wish to set up their own business in order to achieve a level of financial independence.  Organiser: Chris Jones Posted: 12 July 2017. Updated 5 March 2017 CIBSE HCNW Region takes great care to avoid wasted food. So if you do book through Eventbrite and realise you can't make it, please consider others who are less fortunate - please cancel your Eventbrite ticket (My Tickets, This Event, Cancel Order). CIBSE HCNW EVENTS are chosen and arranged ENTIRELY by unpaid volunteers, committed to serving the Region community for professional CPD and the general interest of the wider public. CIBSE HCNW Region does not organise social or largely-social events. ANY QUESTIONS: Please read the details below. "Contact The Organiser" which is quickest (there's a link on this page) rather than CIBSE HQ, thank you. THE QUAKERS (Religous Society of Friends) is a Registered Charity (1127633) supporting a network of 478 area charities which allow communities (like CIBSE HCNW Region) to use their buildings at low cost. CIBSE is a Registered Charity (278104). It supports the delivery of art and science to the wider public. So as policy, HCNW Region seeks out charity venues, not only to maximise the number of events the Region can run within its limited CIBSE grant, but also to pursue CIBSE's charitable objects - by supporting other charities serving wider society. REGIONS: Regional events not only offer technical insight, but also provide a forum for novel, alternative and sometimes incisive or critical views from speakers, which do not necessarily represent the views of CIBSE (nor HCNW Region). FUNDING: This event is fully-funded by CIBSE HCNW Region from its charitable grant, about £7 per HCNW Member, per year. The Region Committee does not organise social events. PUBLIC TRANSPORT: Milton Keynes has fast rail connections to London and you will need a taxi from the station.  MOTORISTS: Please be considerate to residents when parking. See the map below ACCESS: Level access. The Quaker Centre, a U-shaped building, backs onto Overstreet. Turn right on the Fairford Crescent mini-roundabout. The centre is immediately to your right.  TERMS & CONDITIONS: Just to be clear, CIBSE HCNW and the premises reserve the right to refuse or withdraw admission and such a decision is final. Screens and audio are not cinema quality, and this is a community centre environment. Enjoyment of the event is subject to the limitations of the premises, speaker availability and our technical facilities executing what we intend them to do - technical performance is not guaranteed. CIBSE HCNW will not be liable for travel costs, parking charges, excess charges and fines, accommodation costs or the cost of any refreshments not provided at the event by CIBSE HCNW. TICKETS & ADMISSION: Proof of membership* of CIBSE, or another body considered by CIBSE HCNW to be a Chartered or Licensed Body (eg. the IET, Energy Institute, etc) may be requested before being granted admission at the CIBSE Member rate. GENERAL PUBLIC: The public are welcome by paid ticket (when fees reach a threshold, the fund may be donated by HCNW Region to the CIBSE Benevolent Fund), or the Region's hardship concession, if eligible. RECORDING - PRIOR PERMISSION REQUIRED: The organisers insist that any intention to record (audio or video) any part of the event is announced and that consent is obtained from all those attending. FOOD & REFRESHMENTS: Vegetarian pizza. Please let us know if you have any special dietary requirements. To minimise waste, we under-order food, particularly for events starting later; so if you're hungry, arrive early. In London wine and soft drinks are served. Because of transport considerations, HCNW events outside London are alcohol-free.  *RECOGNISED INSTITUTIONS Proof of membership of CIBSE, or another body considered by CIBSE HCNW to be a Chartered or Licensed Body (eg. the IET, Energy Institute, etc) may be requested before being granted admission at the CIBSE Member rate. REFUNDS: Requests for refunds must be submitted no later than 48 hours before the event starts. Members of the public joining up as a CIBSE Affiliate at or immediately after the event may be refunded on request. BAGGAGE & POSSESSIONS: Please look after your possessions at all times. CIBSE HCNW and the venue cannot be held responsible for lost or missing items. TIDYING UP: Please kindly help us clear the room - and if you like, wash up. CIBSE HCNW will not be liable for travel costs, parking charges, excess charges and fines, accommodation costs or the cost of any refreshments not provided at the event by CIBSE HCNW. In the event of cancellation, CIBSE HCNW will refund deposits.  WAITLIST: Where an event is over-subscribed, CIBSE HCNW may add individual ticket requests to a Waitlist, or release tickets to individuals on the Waitlist in a priority order based upon previous booking and attendance patterns.

Fretwork (viol consort)

This fascinating programme lays out a treasure trove of 'In nomine' settings, all stemming from Taverner’s 16th century setting of the Benedictus (which includes the phrase 'in nomine Domini' (in the name of the Lord) from a Mass built on the plainchant 'Gloria tibi Trinitas'. In nomines form a rich repertory of late renaissance/early baroque English instrumental music. So attractive was this music that it inspired 150 years of English composers to compose variants in their own style, including two by living composers, Nico Muhly and Gavin Bryars.

Few other ensembles can match the range of Fretwork’s repertoire, spanning as it does the first printed music of 1501 in Venice, to music commissioned by the group.

"...it is hard to imagine consort playing of greater refinement or subtlety than this..." The Times
"...the finest viol consort on the planet..." London Evening Standard
