Twilight Empowering Early Years CPD workshop: MATHS, MUD, SAND AND WATER! How your sensory play provision & experiences can elevate young children's early mathematical & conceptual understanding, skills & later learning.

NEW!   Empowering Early Years' Twilight CPD workshop: MATHS, MUD, SAND AND WATER! How sensory play provision & experiences can elevate young children's early mathematical & conceptual understanding, skills & impact upon later learning.   Weds 27th JUNE, 6-8pm. Kindly hosted by Chudleigh Primary School.  £25pp including refreshments course materials and CPD certificate.   Led by experienced Early Years Teacher Hannah O’Donnell, this 2hr Early Years CPD workshop for all those working with children under 5, looks at the importance of access to and enhancing MULTI - SENSORY PLAY provision and experiences both outside and in, within settings and schools, (water tables, sand trays/ pits, mud and dirt!), in order to enable young children to develop their core mathematical skills and understanding of key early mathematical concepts, vital for later formal learning. ...'It's not about numbers in the water tray! ....' It will incorporate practical explanation and understanding of recent scientific and educational research into how children's brains develop effectively to learn, using sensory experience, real life items and utilising the scope of larger scale outdoor as well as indoor provision. It will focus on how children develop mathematical understanding and conceptual knowledge through enabling physical skills and cognitive development via sensory play experiences (water, sand, mud etc) and what this looks like in play.  In addition, it will look at what it means to have mastered core mathematical skills (not just the ELGs) and how developing these, through sensory play, will apply directly to later learning in mathematics and other areas. It will address how very young children can begin to apply key mathematical concepts (not just numeracy) through enhanced provision and play based experiences involving the senses and how these can differ both outside and in to incorporate elements of risk, problem solving, team work and autonomy - all vital to allow children to develop their higher level executive functioning skills for learning. In addition, the workshop will focus on easy, cost-effective ideas for provision areas, involving water tables, sand pits/ tables/ trays, as well as mud and space outside - for interest, engagement and learning, in order that they provide a solid foundation upon which to improve outcomes for all young children in their understanding of and application of key mathematical skills and processes. Course Synopsis: What will Early Years practitioners, Managers, teachers, childminders, T.A's & those working with 0-5 age group get out of this workshop? A greater understanding of neurological - cognitive- physical development links (creating healthy brains) in young children, as they uniquely grow How the environment and practitioner can enable effective mathematical skills development utilising sensory play. Simple explanations of the key learning processes involved with sensory play (in this case involving water trays/ sand/ mud etc), which link to the later cognitive and emotional learning and life skill processes (attention, memory and problem solving etc) necessary for children then achieving their full potential and thriving. An in-depth look at what it means to develop core mathematical skills and understanding through play, - not just reaching (or not) the ELGs and how these can apply to later learning. A comprehensive understanding of how utilising the water, sand and mud trays/ provision both outside and in, can elevate early mathematical understanding for young children through following interest and developing enhancements which provide physical challenge, risk and problem solving. A brief understanding of potential negative factors affecting the development of key mathematical understanding in sensory play - Sensory needs (SPD/ ASD etc), Technology usage, lack of autonomy and risky play experiences. Some cost-effective and easy ideas for developing excellent and engaging sensory play provision and enhancements on a budget, which can enable children to develop mathematical skills. Information to take away and support additional provision planning/ ideas for engagement and enhancements and to empower parents’ understanding of the play and mathematics skills development link. An overall, empowered understanding for the practitioner of how to assist the unique child develop their mathematical skills within the sensory play provision set up, as well as modelling, language used and ongoing reflective practice, based on research-led findings. Full workshop notes, plus electronic copies will be given to attendees for their personal use, as well as key references and suggested reading based on the workshop and a CPD certificate of completion.  E: [email protected]  Some previous EEY GM Skills 2018 Workshop Feedback from delegates -  including Teachers, SENDCo's, Managers, Practitioners, Childminders and Nursery Staff. Dartmoor Dreaming: Brake the Cycle Weekender

Ethical cycle tour company Brake the Cycle brings you a dreamlike weekend featuring two wheels, yoga, and food for the soul. An opportunity to escape the city and connect with nature, yourself and fellow dreamers, Brake the Cycle will take you on an adventure through England's most rugged and dramatic National Park. Nestled in the hills of Dartmoor, High Heathercombe - an eco-retreat running workshops and courses - is our home for the weekend. The climb up to the centre is worthy of a King or Queen of the Mountains! High Heathercombe boasts the highest forest garden in the UK, and when we're not on our bikes there'll be plenty of time to explore these beautiful grounds as a group or by yourself. A full timetable for the weekend can be found below. In addition to road cycling there'll be a walk, yoga, meditation, and a banquet's worth of vegan food sourced from surrounding farms and lovingly prepared by Mel. Do book early to reserve your space as we only have limited room and previous cycle retreats (this is our fourth) have sold out. If you like mini adventures, meeting like-minded people, and having weekends out of the city which challenge your body and your mind then this is the one for you! The full price for the weekend is £150. This includes accommodation in the centre and all meals. We are asking for a 25% deposit at the point of booking, and the remaining balance to be paid 56 days prior to the start date (Friday 4 April). Weekend schedule: Friday 29 June*: arrival from 6pm and dinner (there will be a group cycle from Exeter train station at 5pm, for late arrivals we can assist with transit from Exeter or you can make your own way) Saturday 30 June: morning meditation for early risers. For everyone else, breakfast before splitting into groups for road cycling (there will be a shorter ride of around 25 miles, and a longer one around 50). The ride will take in breathtaking views of Dartmoor, as well as wild ponies, Haytor Rock, and, unavoidably, some lung-busting hills. Back at the retreat we'll meet for afternoon tea and cake and give you some rest, after which a yoga session will be available. We'll then eat dinner together and sit around the campfire spinning yarn and telling tales of the road. Sunday 1 July: a light morning yoga session for anyone wanting to iron out any aches from the day before and set themselves up for the day ahead. Following a brunch there will be a group walk to Grimspound (an ancient Stone Age settlement with fantastic views). We will then return to the centre where we'll gather our bags and prepare to depart, taking a scenic 15-mile cycle to Exeter. *Do let us know where you are travelling from - there may be more cost-effective ways of arriving at our departure point if there are several of you coming from the same place (e.g. group saver train tickets).
