Daughters of Necessity: Serena Korda & Wakefield's Ceramics

The Hepworth Wakefield is home to a rich and eclectic collection of ceramics made by some of the great names of modern pottery, including Hans Coper, Lucy Rie and Albert Wainwright. For this exhibition, British artist Serena Korda will choose a selection of these ceramics to display alongside her own new and existing works, exploring where these objects sit between function and sculpture. Working with ceramics for several years, Korda combines her experimental approach to the material with her interest in the acoustic properties of objects. For The Hepworth Wakefield, Korda is creating a new work, Resonators, comprising five large, richly glazed vessels with openings at each end. Visitors are invited to interact with the work by placing their ears to each vessel to hear a range of bass-like tones. The exhibition will also feature a new presentation of Korda’s ceramic sound installation Hold Fast, Stand Sure, I Scream a Revolution, which was premiered at Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art in 2016. This work is made up of 29 individual porcelain mushrooms suspended from the ceiling, which will be played as bells in public performances during the Ceramics Fair at The Hepworth Wakefield in early May. This exhibition is inspired by an essay written for Wakefield Art Gallery in the 1950s which referred to clay vessels as ‘daughters of necessity’. With this in mind, Serena relates the idea of the Daughters of Necessity to the activity of working in ceramics, using alchemical processes that embrace risk and failure. School Prints

During the 1940s, artists including Henri Matisse, Henry Moore and Pablo Picasso were commissioned to create prints as part of a project to bring contemporary art to school children. Inspired by this project, we have invited Martin Creed, Jeremy Deller, Anthea Hamilton, Helen Marten, Haroon Mirza and Rose Wylie to create limited edition prints for schools. The new prints will be displayed alongside the original 1940s works. Image: Henry Moore, Sculptural Objects, 1949, Lithograph from School Prints. ©The Henry Moore Foundation

Perfect People Business Networking Huddersfield and Halifax Lunch

Perfect People Business Networking is open to business owners and managers across our region and is suitable for all sizes of business from start-up to large multi-site national organisations. Our format is simple and begins with open networking over tea and coffee with the chance for people to chat openly. We then sit around the room, normally at one large table and our founder, Victoria, will introduce the meeting. Following this there is the opportunity for everyone around the table to introduce themselves and their business in a two minute presentation. These are mostly very informal with people talking in a relaxed manner rather than reading from a script. The main purpose is to find out who you are, what you do and how we can help. Victoria can talk you through this prior to attending if that helps to steady your nerves! You can of course speak for less than two minutes if you prefer. Following this a regular member or guest will present their business in a ten minute showcase. We will then pass our business cards around the table and stop the formal part of the meeting to share a meal together and enjoy more informal networking. It’s a friendly and approachable group and everyone who attends WITHOUT EXCEPTION is there to see how they can help YOU to develop your business or your role within a larger organisation. We come to meetings not to make a fast sale or sell ourselves or our services. We come to see how we can help the other people in the room with sales, leads, lead generation, advice, contacts, etc. and as a result of them all helping each other everyone receives that same help and support in return. We have no contracts to tie you in, no rules about attending on a regular basis and no targets to meet in respect of referrals, testimonials or visitors. Our meetings and our group WORK for every one of our attendees which is why they return to receive support time and time again. We have a vast number of people who are part of our online community who help each other with referrals, support and advice outside of meetings and this community is open to anyone who attends at least one meeting per month. Our meetings cost just £20 to attend which includes tea, coffee, juice, iced water, a hot meal (normally served buffet style) and the opportunity to meet like-minded peers for support and those all-important referrals. For more information or to book contact Victoria Field on 07726 404069/01484 810236 or email [email protected]

Anthony McCall: Solid Light Works

Solid Light Works will be the first major UK exhibition of artist Anthony McCall’s work in over a decade. It will explore all facets of his work and will include the UK premiere of three new ‘solid light’ installations. McCall describes his practice as existing in the space where cinema, sculpture and drawing overlap. He is best known for his large-scale, immersive sculptural light installations that incorporate the visitor and invite them to become active participants in the work. The exhibition will also highlight the importance of drawing to McCall and the meticulous planning that goes into each installation. Aided by digital projection, McCall’s new installations use only projected light and a thin mist, creating physically powerful works that take on the appearance of sculptural forms in space. Visitors will be encouraged to engage with the planes and chambers created by the projections. “I am thrilled to be showing in the UK and particularly in the David Chipperfield designed galleries at The Hepworth Wakefield. These carefully proportioned and gently angled spaces are unusually sympathetic to the work on display”. Anthony McCall
