Dean Friedman

Dean Friedman first delighted UK audiences with his chart-topping hit, Lucky Stars. The now classic single, paved the way for a slew of hits off Friedman's critically acclaimed album, "Well, Well" Said the Rocking Chair, including familiar tracks, Lydia, Rocking Chair, Woman of Mine, McDonald's Girl and Ariel. In a very short time, Friedman had achieved legendary, pop-icon status, acknowledged, by critics and fans alike, as one of the finest singer/songwriters of his generation. 2018 marks the 40th Anniversary of Dean Friedman's classic album, "Well, Well," Said the Rocking Chair. Friedman plans to mark the milestone by performing the entire album 'live', along with fan favorites from his four decade career. Pursuing his career as a truly independent artist (his albums are financed directly by his fans via his website, www.deanfriedman.com), Friedman has earned a loyal, international following with his insightful and compelling, true-to-life 'story songs'. Songs like Saturday Fathers, Jennifer's Baby, Under the Weather and It's My Job, have prompted enthusiastic audiences to proclaim his songs 'the soundtrack to their lives', dealing as they do with family, friends, neighbors, work and the seemingly trivial, yet ultimately compelling, stuff of everyday life. Friedman will be performing songs from throughout his four decade career, including familiar, radio hits and fan favorites. Invite family and friends and join Friedman for an evening of powerful, poignant and hilarious songs about the ordinary and extraordinary lives we share. "Songsmith extraordinaire!" - MusicWeek "Dean Friedman is entirely unique and utterly brilliant" - Three Weeks

Jeff Williams

Drummer/composer Jeff Williams brings his seasoned line-up back to the Vortex to launch Lifelike, recorded there last June. Dividing his time between Brooklyn and London, veteran drummer Jeff Williams is in the midst of an exceptional run on the Whirlwind Recordings label. Outlier, in 2016, showcased his working UK quintet in a set hailed by allaboutjazz.com for its "imaginative compositions and excellent musicianship." Lifelike, the follow-up, finds Williams and the group live on the bandstand, with a tweak in personnel and an expansion to sextet with the addition of guest trumpeter Goncalo Marquez. Also entering the picture is alto saxophonist John O'Gallagher, a fiery presence on Williams' first two Whirlwind releases (Another Time and The Listener). Tenor saxophonist Josh Arcoleo, pianist Kit Downes and bassist Sam Lasserson remain on board from Outlier, playing with characteristic beauty and grit. The Portraits with special guest Emma Ballantine

Drawingroom darlings of the magnificent kind...generous, warm hearted, compassionate...the Portraits ..a meld of Irish, French and English Folk...their own original sound and featured extensively on BBC radio two and across various regional BBC shows..veterans of not one but several shows here. They are supported by Emma Ballantine...who with an EP that reached no. 1 in the iTunes Singer Songwriter Chart, her music featured by Q Magazine, BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6 Music, Emma Ballantine is rapidly gaining recognition for powerful songwriting and a 'shapeshifting vocal gift' (Gigslutz). A finalist in the most recent UK Unsigned Songwriter of the Year Competition, and tipped as ?One to Watch? by Glamour Magazine, Emma weaves together folk and contemporary influences to create her distinctive storytelling style - inspired by artists including Kate Bush, Tori Amos and Suzanne Vega. The Portraits will be using and abusing the crowd, recording all those present singing for their forthcoming single, an Anthem of Unity for our troubled times, and each and every participant will be credited individually by name on the final record.
