New Business Network

New Business Network Meeting meets on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month at 9.45am  The format will be  • Open networking  • Welcome and introductions - giving people the opportunity to give a quick insight into their business (around 2 minutes) • An opportunity to exchange business cards • A networking break - refreshments • The Business Focus of the meeting - this will give a business around half hour in the meeting to focus on their business,  the idea that being everyone tries to help that business on the day after listening to a presentation, and having a Q&A to build a list of potential introductions, and possible ideas for the growth of that business. Tips, feedback and business exchanged - business tips or ideas, an opportunity to thank anyone for business, or any contacts that have proved valuable. People in the room that they would like to meet with. I believe there is a gap if people are starting a business, or coming to a new area, or just reached a crunch point, when a new type of network group might be able to help. We are noramlly meet at the College as South Cheshire College have expressed an interest in growing their links with the business community. The aim of the group is to help people understand the benefits of networking, if new, and to help build their list of contacts, as well as for everyone to grow their business.

On Learning from Dynamic and Structural Data

One of the important tasks of modern machine learning is extracting the structural and temporal information from datasets. For example, we may want to analyse the time-evolving friendship network structure from social network data. New statistical tools are being created to study and exploit this dynamic nature of various applications.    In contrast to a classic, stationary view of machine learning datasets, this new angle allows us to enrich our understanding of the structural information in a changing system. Challenges arise in this domain together with new research opportunities from both theoretical and practical aspects. This workshop introduces leading statistical machine learning experts talking about their own projects on learning from dynamic and changing data.   Draft programme 10.00 - 10.10 Welcome 10.10 - 11.10 Prof Arthur Gretton 11.10 - 11.20 Coffee break 11.20 - 12.20 Dr Song Liu  12.20 - 13.20 Lunch (sorry, not provided) 13.20 - 14.20 Dr Azadeh Khaleghi 14.20 - 14.30 Break 14.30 - 15.30 Prof Mark Beaumont 15.30 - 15.40 Coffee break 15.40 - 16.40 Dr Haeran Cho 16.40 - 16.50 Closing remarks Join the Jean Golding Institute mailing list to hear of events like this, as well as competitions, funding and other news.

Marbling Workshop

This workshop introduces you to the lovely relaxing and mesmerising skill of marbling, where you can marble onto  fabric and then use this to make a cushion. You will start with a design on paper which you can take home and frame as a picture or use for any craft eg: card making Then choose your colours, float them on the water bath, create your unique design using rakes, combs and stylus and then place this design onto fabric. Marbling is not only fun and exciting, it is also very therapeutic. We will be guide you through the process of this ancient technique. It is suitable for all ages and abilities. So what is marbling? Originally from the Japan, marbling was called Suminagashi, which translated means 'floating ink'. Later on, other cultures in Europe developed this art into what is now called Ebru. During the 16th century marbled paper became popular in Western Europe and was used for edging books, to border manuscripts and frame drawings and paintings. It is now used on endless items. Marbling feels like magic every time! We also do workshops on silk scarves and flowers. All the equipment and materials required to make a cushion will be provided  Refreshments will be provided. Please let us know if you have any allergies.

NAS Far North Conference

We would like to invite you and your committee (max of 5) to attend this year’s Branch Conferences which will be taking place across the country. NAS Branch Conferences are a great opportunity to hear about the latest updates and developments within NAS as well as the latest on our work around the country. This year we will have updates from Director of External Affairs, Jane Harris, Head of Campaigns and Public Engagement, Tom Purser, as well as discussions led by the Branches and Community Engagement Manager, Henry Barnes, and your local Branch Development Officer. We will be talking about the organisation as a whole, our new brand and new look, GDPR and the recent changes to the Branch Support team. Branch Conferences are also a fantastic chance to meet other Branches, to share ideas, reflect on successes and to get to know the other people and branches in your part of the country. All Branch Chairs and Branch Treasurers are very welcome to come along, and we’re happy to have a few committee members along as well. We’ll be able to repay reasonable travel expenses so that you don’t have to shoulder the cost of getting there. If you have any questions about the conferences at all, please contact either [email protected] or [email protected] who are organising the events. All Branch Conferences will run from 10am until 2pm with an option of staying around for another hour until 3pm to network with others or discuss concerns or ideas with NAS staff
