Byrne Brigade: Habitat Restoration at Byrne Preserve

BYRNE BRIGADE Help us restore our ecosystem and provide habitat for wildlife at Byrne Preserve! Byrne Preserve is a sprawling 88 acre preserve used by hikers, horseback riders, and wildlife in Los Altos Hills. On a clear day this picturesque landscape has views of both San Francisco and the East Bay! A diverse native bird, insect, and mammal population call Byrne home, making this an especially important area to restore.  A herd of domesticated horses roam throughout the preserve by day, tucking in for the night at the adjacent Westwind Community Barn. Moody Creek and one of its tributary streams run through the middle of the preserve, linking this piece of land with Hidden Villa. During our 2.5 hour workday, Grassroots Ecology staff look forward to learning about the history of the preserve, exploring future possible uses, and most importantly working to improve this once degraded horse pasture to a diverse, well-balanced ecosystem. Thank you so much for volunteering your time with us! Who: Volunteers of all ages are welcome; minors under 18 require a parent to approve the online waiver when registering for this event. Groups can contact Valerie Lee at [email protected] for their own special program dates/hours. What: Help us restore the local ecosystem, to ensure future use by all! Volunteers will help with planting native plant species, removal of non-native species, and learn about common restoration techniques. When: 9:30 AM - 12:00 PM Where: Westwind Community Barn (nearest address is 27210 Altamont Rd in Los Altos Hills) is the adjacent property to Byrne Preserve; feel free to use this address to navigate to the workday. Park on the dirt lot in front of the Preserve along Altamont Rd, or down the driveway, in the Westwind Community Barn dirt lot. Down the driveway, look for a 3' tall chalkboard denoting "Byrne Brigade with Grassroots Ecology" leaning against the green horse gate, enter the Preserve through the gate, and meet staff members next to a brown shed on your left. What to wear/bring: Please wear long pants and sturdy close-toed shoes. Bring a hat/sun screen as well as a reusable water bottle. We provide gloves and tools for use by volunteers. If after you have registered, you find you cannot attend, or would like to register a party of 3 or more please email [email protected]

Winter 2019 ICAL Integration & Immersion Retreat

Join us this winter for six days and five nights in the California redwoods immersing yourself in the language of life.  Awaken each day to what's alive--engaging your mind, heart, body, and spirit in the wisdom of your authentic compassionate self. Relax, rejuvenate, and refill your empathy cup! Join dedicated NVC students who aspire to make NVC their default language. This winter retreat is for those wishing to integrate NVC into their lives in a way that supports both compassion and authenticity. You will be joining a group of dedicated practitioners who have committed to our 2019  Jan-June ICAL program. Most people who register for this retreat would like to take part in the semester program, but live too far away to make the monthly commitments.  There will be morning councils; multiple topic offerings for the morning and afternoon sessions; opportunities for art, naps, hikes, empathy groups; and evenings for fun and playful NVC games and exercises. Our training team is composed of two NVC certified trainers Jean Morrison and Krisin Masters, and associate trainer Mary Goyer. They offer decades of combined NVC teaching on topics as varied as diversity; NVC & the brain; mindfulness; social justice; living compassion; and more.  We are thrilled Jessica Escobar will join us once again to cook healthy, nutritious organic meals. She can accommodate most dietary restrictions. Check out the Quaker Center on line, www.quakercenter.org to see photos of the venue. We hold a few spots for those who register for the retreat only.  Your registration covers lodging, meals, and an admin cost. $700 for shared cabin with one other person $550 camping or RV $500 commuter We ask that you contribute to the tuition separately by donation/dana, and this contribution will go directly to the trainers for their teaching. This amount is up to you, taking your needs and ours into consideration. If you need guidance for dana, we suggest you consider $500 ($100 per day, split between our training team.) Please note spaces are limited and available on a first come, first serve basis. Register today to avoid disappointment.
