Tayside & Fife Branch - Project Team Perspectives – Business Change Manager & Technical Architect

In our IT careers, we can all expect to be working as part of an IT project team and to have our performance measured by our contributions. Further opportunities will be influenced by our success in such implementations of IT solutions to business problems. BCS Tayside & Fife Branch is offering a series of evening presentations on the Business Life Cycle of IT Projects. Each presentation is self-contained but linked to others in the series as additional perspectives are discussed. As usual these meetings are open to both members and non-members. Students are as always especially welcome.  This series of meetings are all on Mondays at Room 3510, University of Abertay Dundee, Bell Street, Dundee, DD1 1HG. Local street parking is free after 18.00. Catering will be available from 18.30. Please use this time to network and make yourself known to others attending.  We complete our Project Management Perspectives series. Catherine McKinnon as an experienced Business Change Manager will share her perspectives identifying and engaging with project stakeholders to understand what the business change and project is about and what the requirements are. Includes the complexity and challenge of being engaged at the correct time; the challenges of ensuring that the business is aligned with and engaged in the project; the challenges of identifying risks and constraints on the delivery of a business change; the challenges of appropriately informing the stakeholders of where the project is and what their responsibilities are from a business engagement perspective; the challenges of working with the business to correctly test the solution and the business process that is supported by the solution; the challenge of maintaining the confidence of the business in the solution. Technical Architect Jonathan Marnoch will describe the concerns and risks with which he deals. Including the impact of the businesses technical roadmap; working on licencing and scalability; liaising with the project stakeholders including the third party suppliers, project managers and business analysts; how important it is to select the right technical solution for the business problem; the complexity and challenge of understanding the problem and requirements then aligning the best technical solution; the challenges of compromising on technology based on licences costs, project budgets and skills available; the challenges of managing the infrastructure teams to ensure the design is configured and implemented in time; the challenge of working on multiple projects due to the limited number of technical architects available; the challenges of the enterprise and solution architect roles. At every BCS meeting there is the chance to network with like-minded professionals both at the buffet before the meeting and towards the end of the meeting. Students and those at the start of their professional career may care to discuss their study choices or career moves with more experienced colleagues.
