North Ayrshire Open Data Hack

North Ayrshire Council in partnership with Wittin are collaborating to host the North Ayrshire Open Data Hack. The event will be held at Garnock Community Campus on 17 November 2018. The North Ayrshire Open Data Hack is a unique opportunity for North Ayrshire Council to invite members of the community and anyone who would like to work with data to develop ideas that would benefit the running of the council. Community representatives don’t need a laptop or technical skills. You will bring your love and knowledge of your local place and work with data scientists to look at data about the Locality's priorities of Moving Around,  Facilities and  Amenities and Work and the Local Community in an exciting new way . If you can come along from lunchtime that's where your knowledge is most needed and you're welcome to stay for the day or return later to see the results. Those keen to work with data are asked to bring a laptop and we'll build teams pairing those with (or would like to learn) data skills with those interested in the community. The event is looking to bring together those who are keen to work with data with those who are keen to make a positive change within North Ayrshire. No experience necessary, just be over 18 for a day of fun and challenge. The event is centred around the North Ayrshire Open Data Portal: https://maps-north-ayrshire.opendata.arcgis.com/ Teams of 3 or 4 made up on the day will work together to hack together a project using these data sets. Then at the end of the day, all teams will present their projects back to the group for high fives and discussion.

An afternoon with Peter Kerr

Take part in our Book Week Scotland celebrations and enjoy an afternoon with Scotland’s best-selling travel writer! Peter’s critically acclaimed Mallorca-based books have sold in large numbers worldwide and were inspired by his own experience. When the recession of the 1980s hit, he threw in the towel as a farmer of barley and beef cattle in Scotland and moved his family out to Mallorca to take on a run-down orange farm – something that he knew absolutely nothing about! Later books include Thistle Soup, an account of his life from boyhood in East Lothian, and From Paella to Porridge, which tells of the Kerr family’s final year in Mallorca and what they got up to on returning to East Lothian. His first fiction book, a humour-laced mystery called The Mallorca Connection: Bob Burns Investigates, was followed by The Sporran Connection and The Cruise Connection. His latest non-fiction book, Don't Call Me Clyde: Jazz Journey of a Sixties Stomper, is a memoir of his life as a young jazz musician in early-Sixties London. The Other Monarch of the Glen, a humour-laced Highland caper, was published in December 2017. A talented artist, Peter also illustrates his own work.

Autumn events to help farmers and crofters optimise winter nutrition and grazing availability

Cattle nutrition SAC livestock experts will deliver a session on cattle nutrition to release genetic potential and optimise beef enterprise performance. There is wide variation in silage quality between farms and across years. This is compounded by variability in the weather, further impacting quality, yield, cow body condition score and calf performance. This presentation will cover: Setting the scene: Weather variation over recent years and its impact on body condition and winter rationing and how these factors present significant risk to fertility and performance. Variables that affect nutritional demands and why this means no two years are the same.  Understanding changes in demand over the winter, including the forage, energy and mineral requirements through pregnancy and weaning.  Interpreting the key components of a forage analysis and assessing the silage clamp. This will include forage budgeting and the significance of dry matter. Balancing nutritional requirements with this year’s forage quality and stocks and adapting nutritional needs within existing housing systems.  Undertaking cow body condition assessments and using this as a management tool via targeted nutrition. Gauging body condition score from delegates and how this impacts factors such as production, fertility and lameness. Setting targets for weaned calves and presenting the right nutrition. Minimising growth checks through management and nutrition. Interpreting the feed label and reviewing the ration to ensure it is being fed and performs as expected. Grassland management 5Agri specialists Ian Cairns, James Hadwin and Rhidian Jones will deliver workshops on soil and grassland management. The event will provide guidance to help farmers respond to the challenging conditions faced this year with winter storms and a late spring followed by a summer drought. Attention to the basics of soil and grassland management goes a long way to building the resilience required to withstand these challenging weather conditions. Among the topics covered will be: Importance of soil structure and drainage, correcting pH and nutrient deficiencies to ensure high forage production and to extend the grazing season. Deciding on when a sward needs renewing, choosing the correct seed mixture and methods of sward renewal. Much of our grassland is of low production potential and often dry matter yields can be doubled by sward renovation. Managing extensive, low input or upland grazing for best livestock performance and winter feed supply. The pros and cons of various grazing systems including implementing a rotational grazing system to increase the useable yield of grass and improve the quality of the grass being grazed. Conservation of grass for winter feeding and best practice to optimise yield and quality and minimise losses. This is very important when feed is in short supply. Forage crop options for extending the grazing season and providing winter feed for livestock.
