As such, an understanding of the nature of the relationship between words and things is central to effective research practice: it impacts directly on many questions of both practical and broader concern to the researcher, such as: what does a robust, researchable / scientific proposition or hypothesis look like; what is knowledge and what are its limits; what is it to be objective; what is science? It is also a highly contentious issue. Drawing on a number of themes and debates from epistemology, philosophy of language, and the history, philosophy and sociology of science, this session will begin to explore the relationship between words and things, with a view to informing research practice.
