Leading in Transition, and Staying the Course (Better Leaders = Better Business!)

Leading in Transition, and Staying the Course In a fast-changing environment, how do social enterprises develop flexibility and agility to respond to disruption, or to be the disruptor?  And how do Leaders develop survival/success strategies to strengthen their personal resilience? This workshop will help participants:  explore strategies to make your business agile and responsive; and discover tips and tactics for developing personal resilience to sustain you as a social enterprise leader.     It will draw on social enterprise case studies, best practise and the latest thinking about Leadership, and provide some useful tools and tips for those in leadership roles. This workshop is the fourth in the Better Leaders = Better Business! Series, exploring Leadership in Social Enterprise. Better Leaders = Better Business! Having the necessary business skills to achieve long term sustainability is critical, but how many of us possess the natural leadership to inspire our team and share a vision of success yet to happen? Commitment, confidence, clarity, communication and an honest ability to understand ourselves are critical elements in a social enterprise leader’s toolkit. Better Leaders = Better Business! workshops are designed to develop those leadership and management skills. The workshops provide a chance to explore your leadership style, to share challenges and seek solutions to leading staff and volunteers through often choppy waters in a fast-changing environment.  They provide a safe space to reflect on your own practise, and the vision and direction of your organisation.  Drawing on examples from social and commercial enterprise, the workshops will help learners to build their own leadership toolkit, and thus increase the potential social impact their organisations can create. Attendees registered through the Enhance Social Enterprise (Enhance SE) programme can also benefit from business mentoring, picking up on some of the themes addressed in this and other forthcoming workshops. Audience: This workshop will appeal to staff within social enterprises who are, or aspire to be, in leadership roles, whatever the size of the organisation.  This may include team leaders, project leaders, CEO’s, but not exclusively. Cost: This workshop is FREE to social enterprises registered on the #EnhanceSE Social Enterprise ERDF Programme.  Registering for the programme entitles eligible social enterprises to access up to 12 hours of support (through workshops and tailored mentoring).   This workshop is part of a programme of support available to eligible social enterprises to enable them to grow their skills and expertise, and in doing so, grow their social business.  All eligible attendees will need to complete a short online registration form before or on the day.  Please check here to see if you are eligible https://www.heartofswgrowthhub.co.uk/gsp-apply/ and register for #EnhanceSE PRIOR to booking onto the event.  When registering online for the #EnhanceSE Programme please ensure, after the “Are you a social enterprise” question, that you add in the notes: “Please refer straight through to Enhance Social Enterprise Support - Cosmic”.  Thank you. NB.  Registering for Enhance SE is different to booking for this workshop - you also need to hit the Register button to register for this workshop!

Powerboat Introduction Course for Club Members

The Powerboat Introduction Course is a free 1-day training course for new and existing Bristol Corinthian club members. No previous boating experience is required. The course meets the requirements for RYA Powerboat Level 1, including the basics of safely launching and operating the club's powerboats We also include additional exercises which you will find helpful when on duty at the club. It's definitely a fun way to meet other members! The course runs from 9am until 4.30pm and most sessions will be out on the water, hands-on.Upon successfully completing the course, your club membership will be upgraded to allow you to drive the BCYC powerboats on club duties. If you would also like an RYA Powerboat Logbook and RYA Level 1 certificate, there will be a £10 charge.   FAQs Is this course open to the public? Sorry, no. This training course is only available to current Bristol Corinthian Yacht Club members. Other courses are available to members of the public. For more information, and if you are considering joining, please see the club's website www.bcyc.org.uk As a BCYC club member, do I need to complete this course? The club operates a duty rota system and relies on its members to provide adequate levels of safety boat cover. For everyone's safety, only competent people are allowed to provide that cover. As a minimum, we ask that at least one person from each membership has completed this course. Are there minimum age requirements? Yes, to meet RYA and Club safety requirements, the minimum age is 12..Additional safety precautions are taken with children aged 12-16. I completed a Powerboat Level 2 course elsewhere. Do I still need to do this? For Level 2 certificate holders we can offer a 2-hour familiarisation / assessment session, as an alternative to completing the 1-day course. If this applies to you, please contact us to arrange. What has happened to the club's Safety Boat course? To remove confusion with the RYA Safety Boat course, the club's 1-day course has been updated and renamed the Powerboat Introduction Course. What should I wear? We spend most of the day afloat, so please bring appropriate clothing for the weather - warm waterproofs for the winter, plenty of sun cream in the summer, wet shoes/old trainers and a buoyancy aid (although we can provide one if you do not have your own). Will there be a lunch break? Tea and Coffee are provided, but you should bring a packed lunch. Usually the Club's galley is closed on Saturdays. We take a lunch break of 30 minutes. Are there any books I can look at beforehand? The RYA Start Powerboating and RYA Powerboat Handbook are useful references, as is "Powerboating: The Rib and Sportsboat Handbook" by Peter White Do the organisers need any other information from me?We need you to tell us about any medical conditions that might affect your safe participation on the course. Your instructor will need details of any medical treatment being received, or if you suffer from epilepsy, giddy spells, asthma, diabetes, heart condition, back problems or anything else you believe may affect you during your time with us. Please note that medical conditions need not prevent you from taking part, but it is important we are aware. If you are in any doubt about your fitness to take part in a practical powerboat course, your GP should be able to advise. How can I contact the organisers with any questions? You can send email queries to our Powerboat training co-ordinator [email protected]

RECRUITING AND RETAINING VOLUNTEERS

Does your organisation rely on Volunteers? This  new half day training course will cover how to attract volunteers, recruitment methods, and selecting the right people.  You will also learn how best to manage volunteers so that they do fantastic work, want to stay, and are part of an effective team.  We will talk about the language to use, tasks versus roles, where to find people, and safe recruitment processes. We will consider people’s motivation to volunteer, discuss strategies for dealing with difficult situations, and how to structure support. The session is designed to be a general overview of the topic and is aimed at anyone who wants to use or already uses volunteers in a community endeavour. This session will be delivered by Susi Calder who is Spark's Volunteer Development Manager. Susi has worked with, and helped hundreds of small organisations across the Voluntary and Private Sectors for nearly 20 years.  She has worked for national charities, covering the South West, as well as more local organisations in Dorset and Somerset. She is an experienced troubleshooter, jargon translator, problem solver, volunteer manager, and trainer.  Susi is a life-long volunteer, supporting peer education, reading in schools, and has previously been a school governor.
