The Call of the Heathered Hills - Dartmoor Resonance Music Festival

CAROLYN HILLYER & NIGEL SHAW, BONES and WOODWOSE (KATY MARCHANT, STEVE TYLER & RICARDO DE NORONHA) A wild Dartmoor celebration with ancient and medieval music and songs. More details at Seventh Wave Music. Part of the Dartmoor Resonance Music Festival – a musical journey through time at ten venues across Dartmoor, 16th–24th June 2018, marking the 20th anniversary of the Dartmoor Society. The Dartmoor Society is proud to present a unique 9-day midsummer music festival celebrating composers and performers of sacred and secular music, from prehistory to the present day, all inspired by Dartmoor. We have gathered together a wondrous diversity of musicians that represent a rich cultural thread reaching out to communities on Dartmoor, in Britain and beyond. From our flagship Dartmoor Resonance Festival Orchestral Concert, conducted by Simon Ible, to the Dartmoor Pack Pony and Minstrel Pilgrimage Walk using trails across the open moor, it’s a masterclass in excellence for everyone to enjoy. Several newly composed pieces will be premiered including John Woolrich’s reworked ‘Wistman’s Wood’. Dartmoor has fine musical traditions and new music innovation that’s all very much alive today. Dartmoor Dreaming: Brake the Cycle Weekender

Ethical cycle tour company Brake the Cycle brings you a dreamlike weekend featuring two wheels, yoga, and food for the soul. An opportunity to escape the city and connect with nature, yourself and fellow dreamers, Brake the Cycle will take you on an adventure through England's most rugged and dramatic National Park. Nestled in the hills of Dartmoor, High Heathercombe - an eco-retreat running workshops and courses - is our home for the weekend. The climb up to the centre is worthy of a King or Queen of the Mountains! High Heathercombe boasts the highest forest garden in the UK, and when we're not on our bikes there'll be plenty of time to explore these beautiful grounds as a group or by yourself. A full timetable for the weekend can be found below. In addition to road cycling there'll be a walk, yoga, meditation, and a banquet's worth of vegan food sourced from surrounding farms and lovingly prepared by Mel. Do book early to reserve your space as we only have limited room and previous cycle retreats (this is our fourth) have sold out. If you like mini adventures, meeting like-minded people, and having weekends out of the city which challenge your body and your mind then this is the one for you! The full price for the weekend is £150. This includes accommodation in the centre and all meals. We are asking for a 25% deposit at the point of booking, and the remaining balance to be paid 56 days prior to the start date (Friday 4 April). Weekend schedule: Friday 29 June*: arrival from 6pm and dinner (there will be a group cycle from Exeter train station at 5pm, for late arrivals we can assist with transit from Exeter or you can make your own way) Saturday 30 June: morning meditation for early risers. For everyone else, breakfast before splitting into groups for road cycling (there will be a shorter ride of around 25 miles, and a longer one around 50). The ride will take in breathtaking views of Dartmoor, as well as wild ponies, Haytor Rock, and, unavoidably, some lung-busting hills. Back at the retreat we'll meet for afternoon tea and cake and give you some rest, after which a yoga session will be available. We'll then eat dinner together and sit around the campfire spinning yarn and telling tales of the road. Sunday 1 July: a light morning yoga session for anyone wanting to iron out any aches from the day before and set themselves up for the day ahead. Following a brunch there will be a group walk to Grimspound (an ancient Stone Age settlement with fantastic views). We will then return to the centre where we'll gather our bags and prepare to depart, taking a scenic 15-mile cycle to Exeter. *Do let us know where you are travelling from - there may be more cost-effective ways of arriving at our departure point if there are several of you coming from the same place (e.g. group saver train tickets).

Soap Making Workshop

This course will introduce you to the art of cold process soap making. Courses usually start around 10am with an informal chat about soap over essential morning refreshments: think locally ground coffee, tea, spring water from Dartmoor springs, handmade cakes and fresh croissants. After ‘breakfast’ we will talk you through your first batch (roughly 8 bars each) and you will watch a quick interactive demonstration of soap making. The workshop will then be yours and you will be free to make two batches of soap using your own combination of essential oils and botanicals from our extensive range. During the course of the day we will learn about: ·         The history and chemistry behind cold process soap making ·         Equipment needed and where to get it ·         Safety measures required ·         Which oils, butters and waxes can be used and the benefits each can offer ·         How to blend essential oils ·         What moulds can be used ·         Using botanicals from your own garden to decorate/colour your soaps naturally ·         How to treat and store your soap once it’s made ·         Advanced techniques such as ‘swirling’ or using goat’s milk ·         Troubleshooting We will provide refreshments however we do ask that you bring your own packed lunch and wear long sleeved clothes you don’t mind getting a little mucky in. We would be very grateful if you could let us know of any allergies beforehand. Please could you also: ·         Bring an apron and old towel ·         Wear shoes rather than open-toe sandals. You will leave with your own creations (approx. 16 bars), 2 reusable moulds, your own instruction folder with comprehensive notes, suggested recipes, an info sheet on where to source materials and hopefully a mind bursting with wonderful ideas for future batches! All, in all a great day out either for you or a friend as a special gift! £2 from every place booked on this course is dontacted to Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust.

Lino Printing FABRIC

How lovely would it be to create your own beautiful hand printed fabric?! This workshop will enable you to produce a unique stamp which you can use over and over again, so as well as leaving the studio with a hand printed bag and tea-towel you can also use it to print at home! Cushions, curtains and aprons are some of the things I've used my lino carvings for. Come along and spend a relaxed morning creating, meeting new people and printing at the beautiful Kigbeare Manor Farm. An afternoon workshop from 2pm - 5pm, aimed at beginners but all levels are welcome. Guidance at every step to create your own beautiful hand printed tea-towels and tote bags . Once your design is created on the lino, it can be cut and carved to create bold and experimental designs. Using specialist carving tools, a combination of broad strokes and detailed fine cuts, the lino block is moulded to create a relief print of your desired image.Paint is then applied with a roller and using a relief press or burnishing tool, you are able to create multiple prints, which can either be abstract, used as a repeated pattern or that of a figurative design. The cost of the workshop includes materials and refreshments, just bring along an apron and some inspirational designs to help begin the process. ***one morning workshop on the 17th March 10am-1pm***
