Evolution: Torres Strait Islander Masks

Evolution: Torres Strait Masks presents a rich history of mask making in the Torres Strait. The exhibition highlights the significance of masks in Torres Strait Islander ceremonies and culture and their evolution to the present day through the commission works of eight artists from the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula area. Masks from Zenadh Kes are striking objects of deep ritual and historical significance. While rooted in ancient protocols and spirituality, masks and mask making are celebrated today as expressions of artistic and cultural revival. Evolution: Torres Strait Masks provides audiences with a special insight into a revived practice that was once unmatched by all cultures of the world as well as tools, techniques and materials such bones, tusks, feathers, shells, nuts, seeds and natural tree fiber. Evolution: Torres Strait Masks was developed by the National Museum of Australia in partnership with the Gab Titui Cultural Centreand its parent body, the Torres Strait Regional Authority.

SciencePlay Kids Holiday Classes Jan2019

SciencePlay kids classes are designed to encourage your little scientists (2-10yo) to explore science in the world around them. Each class, run for an hour, has 2-3 hands on experiments that foster creative thinking and problem solving in a fun and MESSY way. Dressing in mini lab coats and safety glasses, each student has their own scientific equipment and materials to undertake their experiment at their own pace. This gives the child ownership of their 'research' and thus an added level of confidence in the class. At the end of the class, the children take home the experiment they have completed as well as a handout and materials to continue the experimenting at home. Experiments cover basic scientific concepts (for example solids, liquids, gasses, gravity, light, digestion and the body, absorbance, magnets, chemical reactions, electricity, space and more) and introduce scientific terms in a fizzy, squishy, slimly, smelly, tactile and delightful environment. Come along and get your science on!! Booking information: An ADULT must accompany children for the duation of the session. Booking for SciencePlay Kids classes online (CREDIT CARD ONLY). Classes are $28 per child (plus booking fee). Online bookings are made via credit card ONLY (Vis2/mastercard and AMEX accepted)
