An incredible stage presence, immaculate vocal delivery and strong songs mark Garth Taylor’s performances as world-class. His robust reputation as a live performer has earned him spot light performances on large stages, with a bouquet of international stars including, Simply Red, Shaggy, Jonathan Butler, Phil Fearon, Judy Boucher and Brian McNight. Great Talks at Medway - The Beast from the East and the 2018 Heatwave

About Great Talks Our exclusive Great Talks will be delivered in the stunning Wardroom Pembroke Building on the university’s Medway Campus in Chatham Maritime. Great Talks will be on current topical issues, we encourage you to book early for these FREE events and enjoy some light refreshments with us. Talk 1 of 6: The Beast from the East and the 2018 Heatwave: Is this a sign of things to come?Dr Andrew Haggart The Beast from the East was a 9-day period of intense cold and heavy snowfall bringing freezing conditions from Siberia to the United Kingdom and Ireland during late February and early March this year. Road and rail networks were badly affected, and the Medway Campus was closed for 4 days that week - an extremely unusual occurrence. The weather has since improved and May was the warmest since records began in 1910 with some spectacular thunderstorms and flash flooding. At the time of writing (July) we are experiencing our longest and most intense heatwave for 42 years. It is not just the UK though, the effects of the heatwave are global, with wildfires in North America, Japan, Scandinavia and Greece leading to loss of life and livelihood. The lecture will cover the question whether more extreme weather conditions such as those experienced recently will become the norm in our future climate state - and also look at lessons from the past which suggest paradoxically that north-west Europe could experience decades of cooling in a warming world. Dr Andrew Haggart graduated last century from St Andrews University with an MA in Geographical Studies and then went on to complete a PhD at Durham University. The doctoral research concentrated on sea level changes in north-east Scotland during the Holocene period using techniques such as analysis of stratigraphy from boreholes, dating, pollen and diatom analysis. This was followed by 3 years as a postdoctoral research fellow at City of London Polytechnic investigating the history of the Caledonian pine forest in western Scotland, using pollen analysis and stratigraphy once again. He has been a university lecturer for over 30 years and has continued to develop his interests in environmental history, archaeology and latterly forensic geoscience. Our public events are always hugely popular, please book early to secure your place. Admission is by registration only. Additional Great Talks will be held on 14th November 2018, 12th December 2018, 16th January 2019, 13th February 2019 and 13th March 2019 - all on differnt topical issues.
