Effective Writing: Making Mermaids from Monsters

Are you looking to improve the clarity and precision of your writing at work? Do you wish that you could write in a way that entertains people? Then it's time to start making your words count. Effective Writing: Making Mermaids from Monsters is the professional help you need. This is a four-week course about writing in the real world. The material covered will ensure that, whether you are messaging a friend on Facebook or applying for work, your meaning remains intact. The aim during the sessions will be to enable everyone who attends the course to elevate their written communication above their current abilities and you will be encouraged to bring along real pieces of writing that you wish to improve. If your friends keep getting the wrong end of the stick, then you will be helped to hand them the right end. If you are looking for work but don’t know how to introduce yourself to a prospective employer, you’ll be helped to put everything in order. The sessions encourage a naturalistic approach to writing and a honing of instinct. They will teach you strategies for identifying when your sentences aren’t working and strategies for correcting those sentences. All of the tactics can be transferred across the whole spectrum of writing: everyday emails, official letter writing, reports, essays, advertising copy, even novels and poetry. The course is useful for everyone and will bring out the best in your writing. Course outline (4 weeks): Writing with the Reader in Mind: How not to send people to sleep. Too Much Heavy Lifting: Why you need to stop overloading your sentences. Everyday Punctuation: The evolving use of commas and full stops. Taking a Break: Starting new paragraphs with skill and precision. Following the sessions, you will have the confidence and skills to convey your ideas fully, and this will lead to greater satisfaction in your written communication.

Rebecca Schiller talk + Q&A in Canterbury

In Your No Guilt Pregnancy Plan Rebecca presents information, tips and suggestions about pregnancy, childbirth and the early days of motherhood in an accessible and honest way. Her approach is that every woman is unique and knows her own physical and emotional make up better than anyone else. She therefore avoids taking an ideological position on any issue and never uses words like must, allowed and can't. Instead women are supported to think through what they want and, even when life does not go to plan, to take control for themselves. This rights based approach is refreshing and hugely helpful for women. 'I loved and highly recommend this book.' -Dame Cathy Warwick MSc RM, CEO of Royal College Midwives 2008-2017 and Chair British Pregnancy Advisory Service.
