Worcester Festival Choral Society at Worcester Cathedral - Poulenc: Gloria / Vaughan Williams: Hodie

A feast of beautiful 20th Century choral music comes to Worcester Cathedral this November, as one of the region's most accomplished choirs, Worcester Festival Choral Society, performs Vaughan Williams's glorious 'Christmas Cantata' Hodie (This Day), and Poulenc's celebrated Gloria. Ralph Vaughan Williams's Hodie was the composer's last major choral-orchestral work. Celebratory and richly scored, this brilliant musical mosaic was first conducted by Vaughan Williams himself at Worcester Cathedral as part of the Three Choirs Festival in 1954. WFCS is proud to reprise the work in the same nave, 64 years later. The choir also performs Francis Poulenc's celebrated Gloria, which brims with ingenious musical expression, great beauty and a sense of pure enjoyment. "When I wrote this piece', Poulenc recalled, 'I had in mind those frescoes by Gozzoli where the angels stick out their tongues; and some serious Benedictine monks I had once seen revelling in a game of football.' Performing with the 150 members of Worcester Festival Choral Society - many of whom are selected to sing in the annual Three Choirs Festival chorus - will be the Meridian Sinfonia and acclaimed soloists. Worcester Cathedral Director of Music, Dr Peter Nardone, conducts.

Glass Wreath Making Class

Part of the Festive Series of workshops - A twist on the traditional! Make a glass wreath - surprise your guests with your new statement piece this Christmas. For the wreath class, we make a glass version of the traditional wreath. I'll show you how to layer up glass to make it look like leaves and have depth and berries too. Then we will make a bow out of ribbon ready to attach after firing. The wreath you will make is 20cm diameter and will be fired ready to collect in a few days. Sometimes the speedier people in this class wish to also make a smaller one too, there is a charge for the additional base glass of just what I purchase the glass for. Everything you make will be fired at the end of the class and ready to collect in a few days. The festive series makes a range of goodies using different techniques so try one or why not come to them all, a great way to learn about glass and how to work with it while getting in the festive spirit. Tuition, Materials, tea, coffee and homemade biscuits are included in the price. I love giving relaxed and informative classes, so only have a small number of students at a class to make it a lovely evening out. Come along and see what glass fusing is all about! I look forward to meeting you. Buying as a gift? Drop me an email and I can send you a gift voucher to give once booked.

Malvern Raspberry Pi Jam (Family & Adult Edition)

This is an opportunity to come along with your own Raspberry Pi (or other electronic computer boards and hardware) to show people what you have done, or to attend and learn about the Pi hardware and software and perhaps get started on your own projects.  We have Raspberry Pis that you can use if you don't have your own. We're working informally on a project exploring the Internet of Things using a weather station as a platform. The aim is to collaboratively develop the software, try out different hardware devices, and make use of other services such as cloud-based datalogging, web services and remote desktops. If this all sounds too technical; don't worry! Our other aim is to progress at a sensible pace and make sure we all understand what is going on so that we learn new skills and can apply things to our own projects. The Family & Adult session is suitable for older students (such as sixth formers / apprentices), accompanied younger students, and adults. If you have children attending the earlier Student Edition of the Malvern Raspberry Pi Jam, then this is your chance to try and get ahead of them! After the session at about 9pm, people can head to either The Chase Inn or the Wyche Inn for a drink and chat. The event is free to attend, but because space is limited, we ask you to please register in advance.  The initiative is organised and hosted by Innovate Malvern CIC at the Wyche Innovation Centre, in collaboration with The Pi Shop:         With support from:           The Chartered Institute for IT, local branch    The IoP West Mids branch         The IET H&W network

Smart Social Housing - Internet of Things: Making sense of sensors

Smart Social Housing Internet of Things: Making sense of sensors Sponsored by Secure Meters  | Hosted by 2 Rivers Housing 2018 has seen the rise of the ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT) in social housing, and while some landlords blaze a trail in adopting new IoT solutions, for most it is still early days in their journey.   For many landlords, in fact, the potential applications and benefits of IoT can appear so numerous that the challenge is knowing where to start.   Hosted by Two Rivers Housing and sponsored by Secure Meters UK Ltd, 'Making Sense of Sensors' will untangle some of the basics and jargon and provide a solid foundation for action moving forward.   Content will include presentations from social housing technology thought leaders and live, practical examples of IoT applications.   The event is free to attend for anyone working in social housing, but is particularly relevant for anyone managing assets, IT, energy or tenant services. The event will cover: The fundamentals of IoT – how it works Examples of how IoT can be deployed across social housing Case studies from landlords that have installed sensors in homes – and what they’ve learnt How smart heat controls are helping to tackle long-standing issues such as fuel poverty, mould growth and boiler maintenance The event will also facilitate the free exchange of knowledge and ideas through group roundtable discussions. Confirmed contributors include: Luke Beard, Assistant Director of Development & Asset Management, Two Rivers Housing Mark England, Head of Technical Services, Coastline Housing Paul Taylor, Innovation Coach, Bromford Lab (Bromford Homes) Nigel Ebdon, Secure Meters David Innes-Edwards, Housing Intelligence Report on Smart Heat Technology The University of Southampton IoT Sensor solutions are currently being deployed by social landlords for: Security Locking systems Lighting Heating systems Smart meters Smoke & fire alarms Water leakage Irrigation systems Smart appliances Healthcare
