"Gibraltar and Neanderthal Man" A Fascinating talk about our distant ancestors

7.30pm to 9pm, Thursday 17 January 2019 "Gibraltar and Neanderthal Man" A Fascinating talk about our distant ancestors by club member Mary Thornton. Neanderthal Man successfully occupied Ice Age Europe for over 100, 000 years. That’s longer than modern man - Homo sapiens - have lived on the Planet! A growing body of evidence suggests Neanderthals were far from our dim-witted cousins of popular imagination. They made and used complex tools; used skins as bedding and clothes; adorned themselves with red & black pigment; wore feather and shell body ornaments; cared for their elderly and infirm; buried their dead; produced symbolic cave and rock art. Not only this, they also cooked their food! Occupying vast areas of Eurasia, Neanderthals were traditionally considered the last surviving relative of modern man, dying out around Europe 30,000 years ago. As for the Gibraltar connection - not only was the first Neanderthal skull found there but also there is evidence in Gibraltar’s caves for a last date of occupation only 28 000 years ago. Meaning that Neanderthals survived in Gibraltar longer than anywhere else in Eurasia! Mary Thornton is a frequent visitor to Gibraltar for almost 40 years. She has become fascinated by exciting, internationally recognised Neanderthal research newly emerging from Gibraltar, which has richly contributed to our understanding of Neanderthals. We are extremely lucky to have Mary joining us and hope that you can come along!
