Professor Andy Clark: Expecting the World; the hallucinating brain.

How do our brains make sense of the flow of information from our senses? The brain is increasingly described as a ‘prediction machine’. It creates a model of the world, based on stored knowledge, that it uses to interpret incoming sensory signals. Perception can be thought of as a form of highly controlled hallucination in which sensory information delivers an experience relative to the brain's best predictions. Andy will show how this idea blurs the lines between perception, understanding and imagination, and will ask what this means for the fundamental nature of our perceptual contact with the world.
