Guided tour of Marchmont House

Marchmont is only open to the public for a limited number of days each year, for tours and special events.  The house contains some of the finest Georgian and Arts & Crafts interiors in Scotland: a perfect symbiosis of fine craft and design tradition. It was awarded the 2018 Historic Houses/Sotheby’s Award for the recently completed seven-year restoration, which was described by the jury as "stunning".  The goal is now to bring the house alive as 'a home for Makers and Creators', celebrating innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship. These fascinating, and informal tours last approximately two hours and are led by either Francis Raeymaekers our Curator, or by Wilma Ellis, our Archivist, and offer a wonderful opportunity to see inside a house that has not been 'open' since it was built almost 270 years ago. Light refreshments will be provided. Detailed instructions for the day will be revealed after purchase. Are you a TD10 postcode resident or a student? Claim £5 off using 'TD10' and 'STUDENT' discount codes at checkout (please bring relevant ID with you). About the house Marchmont is an imposing ‘Grade A’ listed Palladian mansion built in 1750 by Hugh Hume-Campbell, 3rd Earl of Marchmont. Long thought to have been designed by William Adam, it is possibly the work of the celebrated architect James Gibbs, and enacted by Thomas Gibson. The interior at Marchmont is arguably one of the finest in Scotland, and the house retains many of its original features, including the magnificent George II period plasterwork by Thomas Clayton, the pre-eminent plasterer of the time. Major changes were made between 1914 and 1917 when the then owner, Robert Finnie McEwen commissioned the eminent Scottish architect Sir Robert Lorimer to enlarge the house and it stands today as perhaps the finest example of his ‘grand’ house refurbishments. Over a hundred years had passed since Lorimer’s ‘aggrandisement’ took place, and and having spent 20 years as a care home it is something of an understatement to say the house was both institutionalised and unmodernised. The comprehensive, yet sensitive seven-year restoration was recently completed and has been the catalyst for an inspiring and passionate appreciation for craft and design tradition, quite literally observed through the layers of history of the house. About the collection Marchmont offers an immersive experience for those with an eclectic interest across different historic periods of decoration but is especially strong on arts and crafts furniture and post-war sculpture including works by Barbara Hepworth, Bernard Meadows, Lynn Chadwick and Antony Gormley. The House holds a collection of over 130 rush seat chairs from Britain's greatest designers including Lutyens, Voysey, Gimson, Russell, Morris, Burges, Archibald Taylor, Heal and Baillie-Scott. In April 2020 Marchmont plans to host the last remaining rush seat chair-making workshop in the UK, continuing in direct lineage from Ernest Gimson through to Lawrence Neal.

MUSIC: Claude Bourbon

Claude Bourbon is known throughout Europe and America for amazing guitar performances that take Blues, Spanish, and Middle Eastern stylings into uncharted territories.

It is very hard to describe the almost endless amalgam of different influences in Claude's playing, all melting into each other, as he moves from classical openings, across a whole continent of cultural roots, from the Balearics to the Balkans, and then across to the Mississippi Delta, and shoehorned into all that is music that would not have been out of place in the courts of Emperors and Kings.

Claude weaves his songs through the audience as if on a journey through life taking in different flavours of Europe and beyond. His Spanish medieval blues evolved into Gypsy, Eastern European, with a splash of Paco de Lucia, Delta Blues and more. Holding audience attention under a musical spell.

Now based in the UK, some of this guitarists influences allow us a fascinating insight into this remarkable musician; Paco De Lucia: Deep Purples Richie Blackmore; Joaquin Rodrigo; JJ Cale; JS Bach.

MUSIC: Pygmy Twylyte + South of Sanity

So prolific was Frank Zappa’s output, that it is nearly impossible to present a representative sample of his work in just one concert but Pygmy Twylyte present you with an unmissable evening of Zappa ‘classics’, if indeed such things exist.

Zappa’s 70’s and 80’s work is the main showcase, though there is the occasional foray into 60’s material. Expect some well-known tunes such as “Cosmik Debris” and “Montana”, interspersed with instrumentals like “Black Napkins” and “Chungas Revenge”. The seven-strong band will surely perform something to suit everyone’s taste (and maybe even some poodles, dental floss, snowballs, devils, and a low-rent monster from the silver-screen on the side...) ARF!

The band return after last years’ phenomenal performance at Mac Arts with support from local favorites South of Sanity.

Over 14s Only (14-16s must be accompanied)

Book ahead to avoid disappointment!
