Night Sky Tour

Experience the splendor of the night sky at Cherry Springs State Park. Observe the constellations through a laser-guided tour conducted by park staff. Listen as we recount the legends and myths surrounding these mysterious patterns in the sky. Following the program, the park will have telescopes available for an up close look at celestial objects. Telescope availability is subject to time and crowd-size limitations. Pre-registration is required to attend this Program and spaces are limited. Registration will open 45 days prior to each event! While you may still observe on your own at the park without attending a program, all visitors should arrive before dark. Programs are conducted at the Night Sky Public Viewing Area. Follow the walkway from the public program parking to the seating area. The park asks that visitors to the Night Sky programs please leave their pets at home. Dim lighting, large crowds and sensitive equipment do not create a pet-friendly environment. All programs will be cancelled in the event of rain or thunder. Visitors may want to check the Clear Sky Chart for 48-hour forecasts of cloud cover and viewing conditions.

Gods in the Sky

Join the North Star Outdoor Guides for a discussion of dark skies, a Native American Night Sky story, a laser guided tour of various constellations, and telescope viewing. Enjoy listening to various stories from Greek Mythology while viewing deep sky objects near the constellation being discussed. Objects which may be viewed include planets, nebulae, red giants, globular clusters, galaxies, and binary star systems. On the darkest nights of the year the park can draw hundreds of people. Reserve your small group experience with North Star Outdoor Guides to ensure maximum telescope time and a more individualized program. North Star Outdoor Guides’ Dark Sky Telescope Tours are about 90 minutes. We suggest that you arrive at least 20 minutes prior to the program start time to locate your group and make yourselves comfortable. We will be located approximately 200 feet beyond the amphitheater to the back of the field. Bring a chair or blanket, a small flashlight (red cellophane will be provided to cover all white lights), and dress in layers appropriate to the weather forecast. It can get cold up there on the mountain! Prepayment and pre-registration is required (tax will be added at the time of payment). Each person in your party must be pre-registered separately. Registration will close at 3pm 2 days prior to class (or when full). Contact the number below to prepay. Your registration will not be final until payment is received. Pricing: $20 per person (maximum 16 people) Weather Policy: If weather or predicted overcast skies result in us having to cancel the program you will receive a full refund. (That decision will be made by 3pm the day before the event.) We will do our best to utilize weather forecasts and the Cherry Springs Clear Dark Skies Chart (http://www.cleardarksky.com/c/ChrSprPkPAkey.html) to pre-determine if a program will be possible. However, due to the fickle-nature of weather our best made efforts may be thwarted and the sky may be overcast during your scheduled tour. In the event your guide is unable to show you at least 3 deep sky objects you will receive a coupon valued at the fee you paid to be used towards a future program (good for one year). If preferred, you can opt to receive an 80% refund in lieu of a coupon. Participant Cancellations: If you choose to cancel your reservation before 3pm two days prior to the event you will be refunded minus a 10% cancellation fee.
