Men’s Retreat

Selah Among the Hills is nestled in the hills of the Arcadia Valley in southeast Missouri and is a private retreat venue in a wooded setting. Here you’ll find peace and inspiration as you walk the paths of this historic Christian assembly ground. Guests will experience the beautifully restored cottages, meeting spaces and southern-inspired meals. Surrounded by tall trees, stone walls and abundant wildlife, Selah is an idyllic haven for the autumn season – a place to pause, for purpose. This fall retreat is a time for some outdoor enjoyment and a chance to connect with other guys who are growing in their faith. The evening kicks off with dinner at 5 PM, followed by the first session led by our guest speaker. We adjourn by 9 PM and spend the rest of the evening relaxing with each other at several of the cabins. Saturday begins with a tasty breakfast and then we gather for more sessions with our speaker. Plenty of free time is woven in, as well as a delicious lunch, with the retreat concluding by 3 PM. Once you attend our fall retreat, you will be sure to make it a part of your annual event schedule! We welcome Danny Singleton as our special guest. Danny Singleton is the founder of Danny Singleton Ministries – a ministry dedicated to assisting pastors in advancing the KINDGOM one Man, one Marriage, one Ministry at a time. Throughout the years, he has pastored several churches and now serves hundreds of churches worldwide. Danny lives, loves and leads DIFFERENT on PURPOSE for His glory! He and his wife, Laura, have been married for 30 years and have five children.   Questions about the men’s retreat? Haunted Hike

Join Elephant Rocks State Park staff for a fall evening of scary stories and Halloween fun at this haunted hike in the park. Park staff will take visitors on a special guided hike to three different story stations along the main blacktop trail. Each station will have a storyteller who will give guests a fun scare with a story about imagined ghosts, haunts and other disconcerting happenings. The trail is 1 mile long and fully accessible. Persons with mobility issues should be able to participate.

There will be treats for children, and guests are invited to wear a costume and get some early trick-or-treating in. Kids who wear their costume can enter into contests for cutest costume and scariest costume. We will take pictures of each entry and then at the end of the night award a prize for the winner in each category. There will be two age groups: infant to 11 and 12 to 16.

Participants are encouraged to bring a flashlight. For more information, call the park at 573-546-3454.

2nd Annual Germinids Meteor Shower Viewing Event

Come out to see Mother Nature’s Christmas light display! If you like star gazing, light shows and are able to brave the cold, this is your event! To mark this year’s most spectacular meteor shower, the park will be open to the public for a rare after dark event. Park staff will be available to direct you to the best and safest areas to view the shower. Please remember, it is December, so dress for very cold winter conditions. It is often colder on the rocks than the average local temperature, so even if it is a mild night, you can become chilled sitting for long periods in the park.

Please remember this is a carry in carry out park and bring in only what you will be able to carry out when you leave. Trash receptacles are provided in the parking lot. Be respectful of other visitors’ experience and avoid excessive use of artificial lights and excessive noise during the event. No tents or other invasive camping equipment, such as propane heaters, lanterns, etc., will be allowed; but you can bring portable chairs and blankets to keep warm. Absolutely no campfires will be allowed.

Come out and create a lifetime memory at Elephant Rocks State Park.

The rain date will be Saturday Dec. 14 2019.

More about Germinids Meteor Shower:

  • This meteor shower was first reported in 1833 by a Mississippi River boat captain
  • Geminids meteor shower happens every year in December.
  • It is dust from an asteroid; not a comet. The asteroid is named 3200 Phaethon.
  • The asteroid orbits the sun every 1.4 years and leaves a trail of dust that the earth passes through every December.
  • The shower gets brighter every year as Jupiter’s gravity pulls the dust closer to Earth.
  • This year, the peak view date is the night of Friday, Dec. 13 2019.
  • The moon will set around midnight on the 13th so the peak time to view is 1 a.m. to 3 a.m., but can be seen as early as 9 p.m. locally.
  • The best viewing is high in the southern sky near the constellation Gemini.
  • This shower can be viewed with the naked eye and no telescopes or binoculars are needed, but you can bring yours if you want.
Event times: 5 p.m. - 6 a.m.
