LISCB Seminar - Professor Richard Henderson, Nobel Laureate

Professor Richard Henderson, who was awarded  the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 2017, will be visiting the University of Leicester on Thursday 18th July and has kindly agreed to deliver a seminar between 3 and 4pm.  The talk will be entitled "The CryoEM Revolution in Structural Biology". Attendees can also join us for afternoon tea in the Henry Wellcome Building Atrium afterwards.  Places are open to all staff, students and general public, but will be limited, therefore booking is essential.   Please be aware it may be necessary to relocate the seminar to another lecture theatre within the campus.  If this is the case, we will advise of the alternative venue at the earliest opportunity.   Abstract: In the last few years, single particle electron cryomicroscopy (cryoEM) has experienced a quantum leap in its capability, due to improved electron microscopes, better detectors and better software, and this is revolutionising structural biology. Using the technique invented by Jacques Dubochet and his colleagues, a thin film containing asuspension of the macromolecules of interest is plunge-frozen into liquid ethane at liquid nitrogen temperature, creating a frozen sample in which individual images of the structures can be seen in many different orientations. Subsequent computer-based image analysis is then used to determine the three-dimensional structure, frequently atnear-atomic resolution. I will discuss the trends and challenges for cryoEM in the next year or two.
