JOHN OTWAY & WILD WILLIE BARRETT

Pigeonhole this duo at your peril, John Otway and Wild Willy Barrett are back on the road with their aptly named Final Straw Tour. Still going after 40 years and still loved for their total in-yer-face originality, the contrast between the dead pan humour of Barrett and mad onstage antics of Otway are hilarious to watch. John’s lyrical genius and Willy’s outstanding musicianship (he seems to play almost every stringed instrument known to man, plus a few hybrids of his own making!) almost become an added extra. Ever keen to add a new dimension to the show, Willy says he is going back to their roots with a new addition to his array of instruments, which he calls the Les Dawson Thumb. The idea stems from the guitar made by Willy’s dad in 1965 from an old guitar neck and a scaffold plank, which became affectionately known as the Les Dawson (a satirical reference to the much loved Gibson Les Paul) and was used on many of the early tracks, including Really Free.  For any Otway/Barrett virgins out there who don’t know what to expect, be prepared for everything from bare-chested theremin playing to wah wah wheelie bin as the duo jump from one hit and 40 near misses to another: An amazing and irreverent performance by two master entertainers.  Be sure not to miss this tour as Willy has hinted that it is “time gentlemen please” for his involvement in the turbulent duo’s existence in order to pursue a long-time interest in a more musical twilight and further experimental projects over his remaining years. See more info at wildwillybarrett.com

Yoga in primary schools, an introduction for head teachers and PSE teachers

Stress in schools is on the rise. Just recently, we heard a lot about the stress caused to children and staff by the SATS tests. We know that children are experiencing mental health problems from a young age. This is not always because of the pressure they face in school, but it certainly manifests itself in school for many. Statistics show that 2748 children across Rhondda Cynon Taf attended counselling in 2017/18. Over 1000 of these counselling cases were for mental health concerns.  Yoga can help give children the tools they need to manage their emotions, stress levels and anxiety. Yoga teaches resilience, promotes self worth and self esteem, and teaches children to be in the moment instead of being immersed in anxiety about the past or future. It can help improve concentration, improve behaviour, and much more. There is research to show that Yoga can improve symptoms of common disorders such as ADHD and reduce anger management issues.  In addition to this, yoga promotes greater physical wellbeing, and connection to, and appreciation of, the body. It can improve sleep and relaxation, and balance energy. Stressed, tired, overwhelmed children cannot perform at their highest ability. Yoga gives them the resources they need to reach their capability, benefiting them, their families, and the school community as a whole. There is a growing body of research to suggest that Yoga is a very valuable addition to the school curriculum. As well as the physical, mental and cognitive benefits it can give to your children, there is also a lot it can add to the PSE curriculum.  In this free seminar, I would love to show you how, through Yoga, I can help you to improve the health, wellbeing, behaviour, academic capability and social development of the children in your school.  The seminar will involve a short presentation in which I will detail the benefits of Yoga for your school, and a short demonstration of some of the practices I can teach. This will help you to gain some relaxation for yourself, something I know is probably in short supply for teachers and headteachers.  I will provide light refreshments, including cake!
