Gardening with Native Plants

What does the term “native” mean in terms of plant selection for your garden? This workshop will address gardening with native plants at the scale of the home garden, along with important planning and design considerations for  creating long lasting landscapes with all season interest. Careful selection of native plants and the incorporation of other garden features for the benefit of pollinators, birds and other wildlife will be discussed. A wide selection of native trees, shrubs and perennials will be introduced along with practical tips for growing them successfully. Kevin Kavanagh is the owner of South Coast Gardens, a small specialty nursery and landscape design business next door to LPBLT's Shirley and George Pond Nature Reserve. Kevin has a longstanding interest in nature conservation, native plants, and garden design. He will be assisted at the workshop by staff from South Coast Gardens and members of the Norfolk County Master Gardeners. There will be two REPEAT sessions held on Sunday, June 23; the morning session be from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. and the afternoon session will be from 1:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. Please only register for one of the sessions.

Lavender Tour & Picnic

You’re invited to ESCAPE WITH US to Steed & Company Lavender Farm, the premier grower of lavender in Elgin County outside the historical village of Sparta, Ontario. Not only is the lavender farm part of a 45 acre horse farm nestled at the edge of the spectacular Carolinian forest and valley slopes, but it is designated as an Area of Natural Special Interest (ANSI) by the Ministry of Natural Resources. They grow and hand harvest Lavandula angustifolia English lavender landscaped into beautiful gardens integrated into the natural beauty of their rural setting. They promote organic growing practices with no chemical intervention. We will be enjoying a tour through the gardens during bloom season, learning about this amazing plant. This is the same species that doTERRA uses in the essential oils we love so much. Following the tour we will visit their shop to discover all their lavender delicacies and products. After the tour, we will be enjoying a lovingly crafted picnic on the grounds. Then they will send us on our way with a special gift. *Please let us know of any dietary restrictions or allergies at time of booking.
