Volley for Change: Beach Volleyball Tournament & Fundraiser

THE EVENT Who: Students Offering Support What: A beach volleyball tournament to fundraise for water access in Chuinajtajuyup, Guatemala. 100% of proceeds go to the cause! When: July 27th, 2019 at 10:00am Where: Hockley Sands, Palgrave ON  Cost: $25 per person OR $120 per team of 6 What Else: BBQ DJ Zumba Swimming Silent Auction 50/50 Optional Camping (included in the cost of the ticket)! THE CAUSE: WHY In the community of Chuinajtajuyup in Totonicapan, Guatemala, families have historically farmed the land, producing and selling corn, tomatoes, and beans to make a living. However, due to a severe lack of rain resulting from climate change, many of the families in the community are struggling to produce crops. As a result, many are resorting to clear cutting and shaving the trees on their land to collect and sell wood to make a living. The people of the community know that this means of making money is unsustainable and harmful to the environment, but currently don’t have many other options. When our volunteer group visited Chuinajtajuyup, we learned that there is a large river that flows through the community. If community members had the means to pump water from the river, they could revert to farming the land. Families in the community live in poverty and do not have the funds to invest in a water pumping system; however, if one were installed, it would truly change the course of many lives there. We are fundraising for the construction of a water pumping system for Chuinajtajuyup. The system will be designed and installed through a collaboration between local community members and Canadian engineering students. Any amount of money you may have to share to support this project is greatly appreciated. Please reach out with any further questions you may have. FAQS What time will the tournament run until? The tournament will run until approximately 5pm. You are welcome to stay past this and to camp overnight!  What is involved in camping? Let us know in an email, once your registration is confirmed, that you want to camp and include the names of the others who will be in your tent. Women's Empress Canyon & Abseil Adventure // Saturday 7th December

This mix of canyoning and abseiling experience is a perfect way to be introduced to the outdoors, especially in the Blue Mountains.  We begin the day with learning the ropes "literally" with a half day abseiling. The abseiling is done off the Narrow Neck plateau itself, with 3 different pitches - 5m, 15m, 30m. Afterwards we all head around to the Conservation Hut area for lunch and the Empress Canyon! The Empress Canyon consists of majestic rainforest scenery with rock jumps from 2m up to 5m and finishes with a breath-taking 30m waterfall abseil! The longest swim required to complete is approximately 10m. You will be provided with a thick, warm wetsuit, canyoning harness, backpack and a helmet. Once you are geared up, we give you abseil preparation training, then off we go to start our journey into the depths of the canyon! Before you get to the waterfall, you will have already gasped at the canyon’s beautiful rainforest and sculptured rock, clambered over boulders, leaped into deep pools, and spotted bright orange crayfish. For the canyon you will also wear a wetsuit to protect you from its always cool waters and there are some short swims involved. We have wetsuits to fit all sizes and shapes.   ABOUT: Difficulty: Suitable for beginners  Requirements: Moderate level of fitness, good general health, comfortable in water.
