Chained Library Tour

Wells Cathedral has one of the few chained libraries in Britain. It is especially attractive as it is still in its original location built in the 1450s, although the current bookshelves and chains are 17th Century.  Our Chained Library houses books published before 1800 which were collected by the canons in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, reflecting their wide-ranging intellectual interests. Please allow one and a half hours for the tour. Be aware that access is by a stone spiral staircase and may not be suitable for those with mobility problems.

An Alternative History of Art: Women Through the Ages 1550–1945 by Katy Hessel

We are delighted to welcome Katy Hessel, curator, writer and founder of @thegreatwomenartists – the Instagram account with over 50k followers that celebrates female art daily. Hessel will take us through an alternative history of women in art through the ages from 1550 – 1945, providing insight into women’s contribution to the history of art. From Renaissance female artists to pre-war Surrealists, the talk will also cover non-Western artists and explore how women have been consistently breaking boundaries throughout the course of art history. Hessel has written extensively on the subject of women artists and has regularly led talks and lectures on the subject for The Courtauld, Cambridge University, Pallant House Gallery and Christie’s Education. She has presented films for the Barbican Centre and audio for Selfridges. In February 2019, she curated an area of Tate Modern for February Tate Lates, and has curated exhibitions at TJ Boulting, Mother London, and residencies at Palazzo Monti, Brescia. This event will take place at the Hauser & Wirth Recital Hall at King’s Bruton School. Parking is available at Blue 18 or Blue 21 on this map. The Hauser & Wirth Recital Hall is fully accessible and has disabled toilets and a lift to the balcony level. Tickets are £5 and include a drink on arrival. Based in Shepton Mallet, Somerset I have an outdoor workshop in my local woodland where I carve and hold carving workshops. I collect ‘green’ wood from wind blown trees or from trees coppiced as part of the management plan. I carve the wood ‘green’, before it has dried out, when it is easier to work with simple hand tools. ‘I have heard it said that our hands are where our minds meet the world. But its with simple tools that the relationship between a craftsperson and the natural world can flourish. We sign our motifs on the tree And the tree forever leaves its mark on us’ Jeff Donne

Somerset Chamber Choir - JS Bach St John Passion

Wells Cathedral Saturday 27 July 2019, 7pm

JS BACH St John Passion

Somerset Chamber Choir
with Musical and Amicable Society

"The aim and final reason of all music should be nothing else but the Glory of God and the refreshment of the spirit."

 JS Bach

There can be few more powerfully expressive works than Bach's Passion according to St John. Here is the story of Christ's last days, told with more drama and musical ingenuity than any swords-and-sandals Hollywood epic.

The baying mob portrayed by the chorus contrasts with the intimate and intensely moving arias of the soloists, and the whole is bound together by the poignant narration of the Evangelist, here sung
by one of the world's greatest interpreters of the role, James Gilchrist.

This is a work offering inspiration and solace in a troubled world; even those who struggle with the idea of organised religion find some spiritual comfort in the story and the music of the great Passions. As the English painter and critic Roger Fry commented, "Bach almost persuades me to be a Christian!"

This performance will be accompanied by the specialist baroque ensemble, the Musical and Amicable Society, playing authentic instruments that Bach would recognise. Somerset Chamber Choir and James Gilchrist are joined by five rising stars from the UK's foremost conservatoires.

In the uplifting setting of Wells Cathedral this promises to be a very special occasion.
