Anna Bolena

After achieving huge success with Opera Australia’s first digital production, Aida in 2018, Davide Livermore will return to Sydney to direct the tragic yet exhilarating tale of Anna Bolena (Anna Boleyn). Combining Donizetti’s classical heritage with Livermore’s signature high-tech designs, this first Instalment of Donizetti’s Three Queens Trilogy will set in motion a display of intrepid humanities. With ardent melodies, fiery singing and acrobatic coloratura, Livermore’s Anna Bolena channels the conniving and reckless behaviour that marks the reign of Henry VIII.

Madama Butterfly

Acknowledged as the world’s most popular opera, Puccini’s classic Madama Butterfly tells a story of two lovers constrained and cocooned by culture and time. Graeme Murphy’s arresting new production captures the pleasures and despairs of love with choreography that mirrors its grace and gravity that ends in the cruellest heartbreak. The traditional tale will remain cemented by Puccini’s ageless sublime music but embrace the digital era with a dynamic backdrop made up of colourful film fragments. Fluttering beauty, caught and pinned for his pleasure, bound and beautiful still.

The work on display will include outstanding paintings, works on paper and sculptures inspired by the great outdoors. The desert works in the collection respond to outback travels that Peter embarked upon in the early days of his public art career, various trips to Broken Hill and subsequent journeys west more recently, including Central Australia and India. The beach works respond to Peter’s passion for water (particularly the salty kind) which came about due to Peter’s upbringing in a very dry Cumberland Plain in Sydney’s Western Suburbs and several temporary stays in the South Pacific.
