The ancient China, India and the subcontinent used cotton mattresses for beds and do. The Japanese use of the cotton mattress forms a multi-functional use especially convenient in homes where often comprised of a couple of multi-purpose great rooms. This facilitated a room in a traditional Japanese to be transformed into a bedroom, as necessitated. The futons could be rolled and stored away with ease. Their durability meant they were in use over many years.
